Watched the Oscars this morning - some excellent winners (Adele - Skyfall for one - her performance was outstanding) one of which was this:

Paperman - which showed in front Wreck It Ralph. If the director is not snapped up by Pixar for a feature length film, there really is no justice.

Behold! My Top Nine Films of 2012!

favourite_films_2012

So - for me, today is the movie version of NYE. It's the Academy Awards tonight and while I won't be sitting up for them (they air at 3 am?!) I will be watching them tomorrow - finger *firmly* on the ff button. There is only so much inane prattle I can take from 'presenters' who think they know a thing or two about films!

With that in mind - I present the 2012 list of my favourite films. I've already started the 2013 list and have one or two contenders for next year's list in mind. Whether they'll make it onto the list (one I am *sure* will!) is another matter entirely.

Still...

SO! Here it IS! The story I have been working for the last couple of months. This is the one that I wrote a good 15,000 (and the rest!) words as part of [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo. You do NOT know how GOOD it feels to actually *share* this with you all.

For now, I shall leave it as it is - I want to return to Westchester, to Magda, Erik and Charles - see how they're getting on, how their menage is getting along but that's for the future - for now - enjoy!

When on a mission in Miami, her husband is 'fished' out of the cold waters of the harbour by an academic, Magda's life is upended in ways that she could never have foreseen. It’s a meeting puts her on a course with an adventure that will take all her courage, intellect, wit and most of all her humanity to see through to it’s end.

I'd also like to thank the moderators of [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang for their help, advice and patience that went above and beyond the call of duty.

Thanks also have to go to my beta, RiverWoman, who corrected me in at least two languages, provided helpful background information and patiently listened to me rant on when I needed it. I cannot thank her enough. Any remaining mistakes are mine and mine alone.

Continuing with the yearly repost of everything I wrote for the seasonal fic exchanges. This time, it's the stories I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. For the first time, I not only wrote my assignment (which I'll post in the next day or two) but not one, but TWO treats. Which still surprises even me. Both can be considered as being 'crack', which might actually explain a thing or two;)

So, the thing I thought I was 'supposed' to be doing (that is posting my [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang fic) yesterday? *Should* be happening on 1st February instead. Which is a good thing as I've just gone and added another 1,100 words to it.

Oops.

So, yeah - I now have to throw myself at the mercy of my beta reader to read through it before bolting it onto the other 36,000 odd words. Again, no typos - the story is really *that* long!

* * *

In happier news - as I am sure *everyone* knows right now: Doctor Who returns on Easter Saturday/30th March.

Which is right and good because just like Christmas brings a new episode - Easter brings the new series. Now, the next question is, will there be a mass gathering of fans to watch the new episode in London this year?!

* * *

I really will get around to posting about the films I'm looking forward to this year, at some point. When I do - chances are, this one will be on the list - Teaser Poster for Trance, the new film by Danny Boyle and it's due out at the end of March too!
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_xmfc_slash_ready)
And so, in the grand tradition of posting wot I have written for various seasonal exchanges and the like - may I present one of the stories that I wrote as the part of the maHOOOSIVE 30,000 odd words I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo in 2012.

Title: Aquila
A Gift For: treasuredleisure as part of the [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant exchange
Characters/Pairings: Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, Raven, Hank, Moira and others
Rating: R
Length: 6,700+ words
Summary: - Charles Xavier is a genetics lecturer and telepath at an American University. Unbeknownst to Charles, there is a bright shining light in his class that he meets at a bar one night. That light is Erik Lehnsherr, mutant and one of Charles' students; something that Charles doesn't find out about until after a night of the best sex he's ever had.

But that's not the reason why he's moping in a bar in Cambridge... or is it?

Author note - heartfelt gratitude to afrocurl for beta duties (and sarky comments that made me laugh out loud and grammar wrangling and kink hitting and-) Without her, this story would be less than it is. Also, thanks to the [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo challenge for getting me to *write*!.

And, yes, the bar does exist.

This story can also be read over at Archive of Our Own

Regardless of having earned his degrees at Oxford, Charles always had a soft spot for the city of Cambridge. )

I was supposed to be writing 3,000 in that month - overachieved much?! But it's taken me this long to post - which kind of balances everything out;) I will be sharing the 'fruits' of those labours over the next couple of days... so consider that fair warning!

The 2007 List, The 2008 List, The 2009 List, The 2010 List, The 2011 List, The 2012 List

Life Of Pi - a beautifully created, wonderful film. Another corker from Ang Lee.

Jack Reacher - Despite the lead looking nothing like how he is described in the books, this is an excellent little thriller that I would recommend to all and sundry.

Gangster Squad - Loved the production design, Sean Penn had all the best lines and there were some interesting friendships. Even so, I must be one of the only straight (ish) women who does not fancy Ryan Gosling!

Les Miserables and his orchestra - Never seen the stage production, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I went to see it because a) it's an Best Picture Oscar Nominee and b) Hugh Jackman (future ex Mr Beckymonster) is in it. Needless to say he is a revelation, as is Anne Hathaway and by the end I was in tears. Go see!

Lincoln - if they don't give the Best Picture Oscar to Argo - then I'll be happy if this one in it's stead. A superb film on every level (and yes, Daniel Day Lewis *will* will that 3rd Best Actor gong)
beckymonster: Becky icon (tv_MST3000_random)
Um... HI! Yes, I am still (by the grace of the Flying Spagetti Monster) still here.

I'll do the RL version before I do the Grand Wrap Up For 2012 as this will be a lot quicker than the Not RL stuff. I wrote four stories for various fandom holiday exchanges as well as looking at the films of the year....

And that's before getting to unveiling (at long bloody last!) the [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story I've been working on. Productivity? Thy name is Beckymonster!

So...

Christmas was quiet - Shinzon is growing like the proverbial and is also * ambulatory*. So guess who spent quite a bit of his stay trundling after him, making sure that he didn't get into harm's way or owt. I may have brought him a knitted stegosaurs, called Steve for Christmas; which I've been told, he adores. He might prefer his grandad but I'm winning the cool auntie war so far;)

Then - there was the keyhole surgery...

Cut as this is likely to be icky )

Admittedly, it's taken nearly a week to get back to a semblance of good health but I'm feeling okay right now - bit cold but we do seem to be having the yearly cold snap right now.

Which, when you think about it, is just the right time for me to get 85% of my hair cut off. Going from shoulder lenght curls to a wavy pixie cut. 'Short' doesn't even *begin* to cover it. It's something that I've wanted to do for at least a decade and I'm glad I did. Even though I now have to use a hairbrush (rule one of life with curly hair? Do Not Use A Hairbrush on it. Not unless you want to go for the 'electric shock' look) and a hairdryer to style it!
One thing is certain - I draw the line at straighteners!

So - that is me - how are you guys?

2012 has been, in the words of Charles Dickens, the best of times and the worst of times could have been better of times. I just hope for all concerned that 2013 performs slightly better;)

Whomever you are, if you are reading this, you are awesome.

I would do a proper post for you but I've just gotten out of seeing The Hobbit (with added Trek Trailer) when I saw my number come up. So read my letter and know that whatever you craft me, I'm bound to like it!

So, go, write!

Pacific Rim trailer - which I saw in front of The Hobbit, with zero warning that I might be seeing it. Yes, I'm sure that the people sitting next to me thought I was deranged.

Is it July Yet?!

* * *

So, counting out the fics I have currently on the go:

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant has been posted and my recipient liked it! \o/

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - both a story and a treat are in\o/\o/\o/. I have another on the go - wanting to get that done asap because....

[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang 1st draft is DONE. Final word count - over 40,000 words. No that is NOT a typo. I haven't done anything with it since finishing, which means that I have to go back and wrestle it into shape. Thankfully I have *ideas* as to what needs re-writing/tweaking/cutting but still... it's by far the longest thing I've ever written.

Now I just have to get it finished (ahahah!) and posted. And did I mention that I'm toying with the idea of a 'sister' story?
beckymonster: Becky icon (tv_MST3000_random)
- Y'know, I am going to have to either schedule in posts or set myself a goal to post every day ala [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo else I just let it slide something terrible.

Anyhow - I am here mores the pity!. And I don't have videos to share neither. Oops.

Health Update or 'Mick' Update )

* * *

In happier news - I saw Lawrence of Arabia on a BIG screen with SERIOUS sound (and very comfy chairs - long film is *long*) yesterday afternoon. Wow, possibly one of the most beautiful cinema experiences I've had this year. If you've never seen the film, block off half a day, find the best home cinema set up (blu-ray would be a must) and enjoy.

Yes, it has flaws (no women characters at all, some 'questionable' casting calls) but still it's a corker of a film. And I might have to go find the Lawrence/Ali slash on AO3 when I'm not so run over with fic... *sheepish*

* * *

The UK has already had it's first snow - '3 hours 20 minutes journey time to work' is all I will say on the matter. My usual commute? 45-60 minutes, albeit dependent on traffic. Yup.

* * *

So, that's my news - what's yours?
beckymonster: Becky icon (TV_startrek_scotty)

Star Trek Into Darkness (2012) 'Announcement' trailer. Inital verdict? ooOOOOOOOoooooo!

Captain! There be SPECULATION (and a possibly more spoilery trailer too) here! )

In short - Is It May Yet?! Now About Now?!
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_x-men_charles&erik)
So - picture the scene...

Our brave heroine, who is writing like it's going out of fashion to make her words for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo for the day. It also helps that these words will get her to the 'good bits' of her [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story. Denouments and all that jazz...

She goes to her friends page to find the relevant entry and sees the following...

Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart to star in X-Men: Days of Future Past alongside Michael Fassbender and James MacAvoy.

Our heroine's first thought? 'Naaaaahhhh,' then upon reading Bryan Singer's confirmatory tweets - ZOMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEE! FLAIL!

So yeah - there went me getting anymore writing done this evening! I have committed 493 words so far, which is a good number but I really wanted more but... this! be still my fangirl glee!

I was looking forward to this movie - although I've never read the original comics, when Matthew Vaughn left, I was nervous, perfectly understandable as we could have ended up with another Brett Ratner (pitoo!) but then Bryan Singer stepped in and I was much pleased. And no this.... eeeeee! Although - I will give £5 to Stonewall if Sir Ian makes a reference to this movie in interviews because you know he will, although I can vouch that he's done something similar in the name of Art too and daymn Mystique is one lucky lady. So's her brother.

So... Is It Summer 2014 yet?! How About Now?!
