A 'I've been stomped on by a Kaiju' sort of day. I've been doing what I do for 20 years (training and working) in about three weeks and for the last 18 odd years, it's been worth all the hassle and grief. Now? I'm not so sure.

* * *

In happier news - The line up for the London Film Festival has been announced. I've had a chance to have a good look through the line up and by my reckoning there are about 8 odd films that I want to see.

Which considering I only made two (and the surprise film) last year - this is saying a lot. Also add in these are films I can actually *attend* given that I have a hyper-busy teaching schedule, a wedding and a birthday party to attend during the 10 days that the festival is running... this feat approaches astonishing!

We shall not speak of the spreadsheet I've created to organise all of this (it exists). Now I just have to do battle with the box office to buy them all but it will be better than it was last year. As I was in the doctor's surgery being told 'Yep, you've got Brighton Beach in your gall bladder and hey! you're going to have to have surgery to remove it!'.

Good times!

Oh and I put in my holiday card for the 'BIG' holiday I'm going on next year. It may have been a day to forget but there have been some silver linings. Not many but one or two.

This week has been a 'good things, bad things' week.

The bad was *bad* - I screwed up at work in a very unprofessional way. I'm in the process of apologising and keeping everything crossed That Will Be That. We'll have to see, I sure as heck hope so.

The good was very good - Tuesday was my birthday, thanks to everyone who wished me well! Spent it in London doing All The Things! Specifically, had my hair cut shorter than before (and that was short) saw Oz the Great and Powerful which was... worth the money I spent on a ticket - it passed Bechdel, which is saying a bit and it was very pretty to look at. Sometimes, I am very easy to please;)

I also saw the James MacAvoy production of MacBeth - which was excellent. Which means I've now seen both of the Professor Xaviers' play this role (Sir Patrick Stewart performed the role in '07) - and I've seen both of the Magnetos expose themselves in the name of Art too... but that's a tale for another day

Ahem!

MacAvoy was chillingly superb as the Scottish king in a very futuristic, dystopian setting of the play. There was one scene that will stay with me for a *very* long time, I won't spoil it - even though, you know the play is nearly 400 years old! but needless to say, if MacAvoy does cold hearted b*stard very, very well.

It's not a spoiler to say that he (and the rest of the cast) all spoke with Scottish accents, which worked remarkably well and does make me wonder if anyone else has done this before... The stage was tiny - it could fit into my work office (which isn't huge - there are seven desks in it and I don't have to shout to be heard across it either, just talk normal) with enough space left for the server room (at work - not in the production).

If you are in the area of London and can finangle a ticket - not many, I know, but hey! - I would recommend it, heartily before it finishes at the end of April.

So, that's me - how are you guys?

You can't send wheelbarrows to Nigeria and you can't send pairs of shoes to South Africa. No, I don't know why either!

PSA - for those of you who gave up on Delicious during the great migration of last year... they've started listing the full RL names of users as part of their account. Such as 'Beckymonster'/'Becky REDACTED FAMILY NAME'.

Ahahahah no. So, yes, my account is no more. Separation of 'church' and 'state' just isn't for elections you know!

* * *

Talking of church and state - Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (and part time Bond Girl) offers her congratulations to Barak Obama on his re-election as President of the USA - good to 2016 or until independence is revoked. ('tis a joke but just in case... it's a joke!)

Just don't make us regret the independence thing kaithanxbai!

Posting this as part memory and part 'I AENT DED!'...

Snow covers much of UK - which, as the article notes, led to travel chaos.

Such as one of the main tube lines being shut down and leading to a two hour door-to-door journey taking SIX hours. I'd prepared for most eventualities - just not *that* one

I went from a David Lynch double bill (Dune - where I *finally* noticed that Gurney does have a scar! Don't ask how long it's taken to realise that - it's embarrassing) and Blue Velvet to a Lynchian horror story of trying to get back home. All I will say on the matter is that London Bus Drivers are superstars, you would have been able to find Unicorn manure but not a taxi and Fiat Pandas are joys to drive. And seeing a poster for this movie just as I finished the half hour trudge back to Mr Spock was the thing I needed at that point.

For reals. Though I may wait a week or two before I go see it. Or wait for it to be released on DVD and see it in the Summer....

2011 Oscar Nominations

Things AMPAS got right:
127 Hours nominated for Best Picture. Ditto James Franco in the Best Actor category for the same film.

Helena Bonham Carter nominated for The King's Speech - her performance was as good as Firth's in that film.

Christian Bale for The Fighter - I haven't seen it yet but Christian Bale is an awesome actor whom I've loved since Equilibrium

Toy Story 3 gets a nod in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Inception being nominated. That CD leaves my car over my cold dead bod.

Things AMPAS got wrong
Christopher Nolan not being nominated for Best Director. What (or who) does he have to do to get nominated?

Inception not being nominated for Best Editing (a must have to stand a snowballs of getting Best Picture)

No nomination for music *or* for SFX for Tron: Legacy. You can say what you like about that film I won't be listening to you but those were two of it's strengths.

No costume nomination for The Black Swan. It's a superb film (review to follow!) and while I can understand that Clint Mansell's score is ineligible (seriously - it's Pop Will Eat Itself Does Tchaikovsky - in a good way) but that's going too far.

So - in short... same stupidity, different year.

I've no idea whether I'll be able to get onto a computer (unlikely) so if anyone is waiting for anything from me - Friday is going to be the earliest I can do *anything*

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to finish packing and try not to stress too much over the fact that National Rail Enquirires have no record of my train...

See you all Friday!

One more for luck

Dear Immune System

Look, I know I said that October was going to be hell. This does not mean that you can shirk you job and give me cold sores! Buck up back there and get rid of them for next weekend!

Yes, I am considering this - consider this fair warning;)

Does anyone have - or can point me in the direction of...

A Recording of someone (anyone!) reading the poem 'How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count The Ways...' by Elizabeth Barrett Browning?

(Context - I'm reading this for my sister's wedding in a fortnight and... Be thankful you don't work with me - I may be asking colleages to at least let me practice on them before the wedding rehearsal)

I don't know what I can offer in return but all reasonable offers considered!

Between this and work trying to kill me (six days this week - I worked today to cover for a colleague with a family emergency) November 1st canNOT come quick enough!

Thing One
A question for those on my flist who have completed/taken part in Big Bangs/written fics that are over 20,000 words long...

Is it common to look at said fics (especially with just over two weeks before posting) and say to yourself 'I am so *sick and tired* of this *&^%!'

No reason!

Thing Two
Professor Brian Cox and Professor Stephen Hawking in 'conversation'. If nothing else - listen to the audio.

If I fall off the (metaphorical) face of the planet/lj... It's not got anything to do with the latest kerfuffle... it's because my [livejournal.com profile] tw_bigbang story is due on 28th September. I'm not panicking, just terrified. Panicking comes later!

To be filed under OH HELL NO! Warners want to make a TV show out of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Apparently they want Eric Kripe as the show runner...

I'll admit that I've never seen any Supernatural but I've seen enough posts/meta about various aspects of it to make me think ill of the idea. Scratch that - they want to make a tv show out of one of the greatest comic books ever. This cannot end well.

DAY NINE - A WHO RELATED PHOTO THAT MAKES YOU ANGRY/SAD

I'm going with 'sad' here as if I go with 'angry' I'll be snarling with the best of them over recent developments and what with the idiotic changes to 'Strictly Come Dancing' and FFS! the BRITISH Prime Minister will have the ENGLISH flag flying over 10 Downing Street during the World Cup...

This Journal Is All About The Squee. I need to remember that!

So:

I know this is not the last time these two meet but... my heart clenched in my chest when I saw this scene. It's sad in a good way. Remembering and treasuring what has been and moving onto newer and better things.

Also

Out of context - this is beautiful. In context - this is beautiful and heartbreaking. It's Jack saying goodbye; he knows a suicide mission when he sees one and this is it. And yes, I cry like a small child when I see this scene. And I don't give a rats arse who knows it either.

Normal service to be resumed shortly...

TARDIS stops - past and future )

Up
- THANK YOOOOU to [livejournal.com profile] celandineb for my snowflake. It is a thing of beauty that makes me grin stupidly. Thank you again.

- It's the last week of term. Which means that in about 90 minutes time, I will not have to do another late night until 2010!

- Newly dicovered website/blog alert! Temptalia. US based, covers make-up and most importantly for me, nail varnish. I'm next to useless where make up is concerned (mascara is a particular bugbear - lets just say that I tend to look more like Jack Sparrow than Zaza!) but nail polishes? The more colourful, the better! My toes are usually a sight to behold;)

- With the exception of one or two items (a small gift for a Sibling Unit and books for the Father Unit) - Christmas presents have been brought and wrapped \o/!

Down
- I have sinusitus and/or a cold coming on. Later than usual in the year but still not good. Does this mean I earn a housecall from one of the three chaps in my icon? No? Bum!

- It's the last week of term - most students have hand-ins due next week. So where are they all? If you answered 'In the Library', you are correct!
I should be grateful none of them can read minds...

All Over The Shop
Disney's 'The Black Hole' to be remade. File this under 'it could be awesome... or it could be pants!'. For the record? I love the original.

List of 2010 Football (Soccer) World Cup fixtures in Date Order. I abhor football 99% of the time but next year from mid-June to mid-July, it's going to be utterly unescapable or it will be so long as England are still in the competition!.
I'm posting the link so that people have a heads up if... shall we say 'more important' things like movies and Doctor Who are moved around as Auntie Beeb will be showing some matches (Football trumps even Who - inconceivable I know!) you know why.
More details as I get 'em.
