Trundling forward - or at very least, trying to trundle forward. In a literal sense on Friday as I go to Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Film Festival. They're showing Brave, which, is not released in the UK until mid-August. We may have gotten Avengers and Prometheus a week before the US but this is taking the urine somewhat.

Even so - it's going to be a weekend in one of the loveliest cities I can think of, so there is that.

* * *

In other news - work is undergoing one of it's periodic 're-structures'. Usually the ones who get 're-structured' are the pay grade above me. Not this time, not so much, but the main thing is that I will still have a job and I will get on and re-apply for my professional exams as this time I need to have the paperwork as of my qualifications for my job.

My main reasons for not getting them done before has been that I have had no incentive to get them done (what can I say? I'm goal orientated;)) but now? I have. So, consider this fair warning that there will be whining ahead.

* * *

Mr Spock (my much beloved car) went in for his first MOT test last week. And true to form, for me anyway, he failed. But in comparison to other failures, it was relatively minor (brake pads were worn down - which is a *good* thing!) and not as 'expensive', I've had to buy new cars before!

Could have done with a little more notice regarding the failure - the garage didn't phone and if I hadn't called and just gone to collect the car.... I would have been stranded 20 miles from home, having missed the last bus. Thankfully, the crisis was averted but the meltdown would have been spectacular, mind.

* * *

In more 'fannish' news - currently working on a story for [livejournal.com profile] xmenreversebang - I've not finished it but I am over the lower limit, so it's a goer. The art is a thing of *joy* - it's just a shame that the muse decided to go on a monumental walkabout at the same time. Still - it's words on a page and I'm hoping that more will follow.

* * *

So, that's me. How are you guys?

So, yes, Christmas happened. Shinzon is growing like the proverbial - he also has hair. Or an approximation of it. Photos to follow. Even so, it was good - there was food, there was family and there were Doctor Who (and book tokens - lots of book tokens!)

The Chrimbo Limbo also happened. I picked up a pinch hit for [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant; tried that 'Life' thing everyone keeps talking about and watched not enough movies More on that when I do the December round up. So that's why I've been monster non-grata for a couple of days.

Something else that happened, as many will know, was [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. This year, to my astonishment, amazement and undying gratitude, I recieved not just one gift but THREE.

Yes, you read that right, THREE. I have no idea what I have done in the last year to be accorded such wealth but I would like to express my undying gratitude to those lovely folks who put pen to paper/fingers to keyboards for the following lovely stories:

Dreams, Many-colored (4183 words) by faviconboundbyspells
Fandom: Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

Relationships: Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester

Threads (1061 words) by faviconfresne
Fandom: Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte, Destino - Salvador Dali/Walt Disney
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester

These two are borne from the same prompt - Bronte writes about Jane meeting Rochester in her dreams when they are apart and I asked for fic that deal with that. And these two jewels are the results. The first one conjures up all sorts of wonderful AUs for this paring (the Pirate!Rochester would suit the 2011 version down to the ground;)) not to mention it gives St John Rivers a fair hearing as well.

The second one is of especial note as it marries up Jane Eyre with Destino a collaboration between Dali and Disney. Which if you have never seen it, I do recommend that you take five minutes out to watch it as it is a thing of beauty. I love Dali's work and this marriage of these two wildly divergent canons is a beauty to behold.

My main 'gift' was this Oops! No, it wasn't! but it was still lovely!:
A New Normal (1434 words) by faviconBeatrice_Otter
Fandom: Superman Returns (2006)
Rating: General Audiences

Relationships: Lois Lane/Richard White
Characters: Lois Lane, Richard White, Clark Kent, Jason White

A lovely, sweet story, set post film that shows Clark, Richard and Lois coming together for the benefit of Jason to try and ensure that he has the best of both worlds. It's a lovely gen story that I recommend to all and sundry.

If any of my gifters are reading this - you are all awesome and I wish you nothing but a superb 2012 filled with lots of good things and helpful muses. Thank you again, you are all wonderful.

I cannot speak to my [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant gift yet, as it hasn't been given yet but I am sure that when it arrives I will like it a lot. I haven't had much of a chance to read many of the other fics yet (see note above about trying to have a life. Not recommended!) but I am hoping that when everything calms down to a dull roar, I'll be able to finish going through both the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide archive and the [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant collection to read All The Fics!

Needless to say, that as it's a new year, I have various 'housekeeping' tasks to do - such as setting up the Films Watched in...' list (now in it's sixth year!) and to post my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story and make a few comments on it.

So in short - prepare to be spammed;) And I hope that everyone has a wonderful 2012!

Dear Awesome Person

Yes, dear recipient of my Yuletide requests – I am talking to *YOU*. You are (hopefully!) going to write me an awesome story about the films and book that I love and adore more than cake. Ergo, you are awesome, QED.

If you are reading this because you are pinch-hitting – then the above goes for you as well – with bells on.

Please feel free to have a nosey around my journal to get a feel for me and my tastes inanities. I love and adore films - which will explain why all my requests are movies (or have been adapted into one this year!).

You'll find the tags of some use - the general 'movies' tag especially. Also, I'll throw in links for each relevant fandom.

If that's too 'general' then let me eludicate for you... *ahem*

I like a lot of things but there are a few hard and fast things I Do Not Like. They are:
Character death, kink, humiliation, partner betrayal, character bashing (especially women characters) porn minus plot, dark themes. Fluffy monster is so *fluffy* you're gonna die (Despicable Me quote ftw!)

Okay - so, things I *do* like:
Plot, character-led stories, friendships, alternative realities where one thing changes, hugs/cuddling, women characters being awesome and competent, teams equaling families, happy(ish) endings, conversations/banter, films, kisses, laughter, humour, science, teamwork, adventures, slice of life, dancing, joy, life...

If you want to go down the sexyteims route (and given that at least three of my fandoms have some of the most beautiful people on the planet - knock yourself out!) - sensuality is key as is emotional engagement and consent among adults too.

Note – as the ratings have been disabled this year – if you, awesome writer, can’t ‘do’ romance (het, slash or poly as the prompt suggests - or not) I would lovelovelove (more than cake!) Gen fic.

Most of all, I want you to have as much fun writing as I will have reading what you create.

I hope that makes some kind of sense - if not, ask the mods (or a hippo!) to ask me for more intel.

So - the fandoms:

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte, Sunshine (2007), Superman Returns (2006), RocknRolla (2008) )

And that is that. Obviously - these are just suggestions - if you, awesome writer, have a bunny that’s currently feasting on your ankle that you want to write then... fire up the word processor, draw yourself a beverage and WRITE! I’m sure I’m going to like it!

So - to conclude - have fun and I hope that your fic is as awesome as you are!

Hello there - Don't panic! I can't be the only person who looks at their assignment, (mildly) freaks out and goes to see if they can find anything useful out about who the stranger! From the Outside! lovely person they are writing for.

Well, if that's you - have a nosey around. My fic (should you want to have a look bwahahahah can be found under the fic_by_me tag. For my thoughts on XMFC and movies in general - click on either X-Men tag or my Movies tag. This Post about The Hunger Games trailer encapsulates ALL THE FEELINGS regarding this fandom. Or near enough.

So - tl;dr - write a story, have as much fun as I will have reading it and you're going to be just groovy.

I might have mentioned in the past about The Female Gaze and why it is Important.

Well - if for those of you would like to practice said gaze - may I present Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender at the photo call for 'A Dangerous Method' @ the London Film Festival. Viggo at the Premiere and Michael as well

You're very welcome;)

* * *

Talking of the London Film Fest - reviews are incoming. Consider this fair warning. The tl;dr version is that I saw a three films that ranged from 'Top Ten Of The Year' to 'Damn Good' and one that sets a new bar for Utter Crap. Your Mileage May Vary.

Also - the new BFI guide and Empire magazine dropped on my doormat today - that's me kept quiet for the rest of the week;). They have a season of MGM musicals on - this cannot end well for my bank balance!

Serkit message to [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen Sherlock is now 6th December - is that good for you?

* * *

Sticking this here, in an effort for me to *think* about prompts - Secret Mutant Fic Exchange a Secret Santa for X: Men - First Class. Which finally hits DVD next week (yay!). In other news, Jane Eyre (2011) comes out on DVD on my birthday! Let's not talk about the fact that it's the Monday *before* Mothering Sunday. Another of my favourite films of this year - they shouldn't have!

In related news - patently snurched from [livejournal.com profile] or_mabinogi What was really going on after X2!

And finally a story I loved This Must Be What Pets Are Like - Agent Coulson traps Loki in the shape of a small, black cat. And keeps him as a pet. Gen but very adorable.

* * *

So, how are you guys?

I'll quote her summary - " It started innocently enough... " This is simply the story of a very quiet weekend in the Whoniverse. No gore, no vomitty monsters, quite a lot of tea being consumed.

Well worth your time for a read. If only *this* was canon
