(Note - I started writing this early as it usually takes me forever to try and form a letter that *may* pass for coherent. I finished it just before nominations opened, so don't mind the time stamp!)

Oh crikey, this has come around again quick...

Hello! I'm Beckymonster, your recipient for this round of [livejournal.com profile] yuletide... or that rather strange soul with the bizarre requests, one of which has 'inspired' you!

How are you? I hope this letter finds you well. Can I just start off by saying that you are an awesome person with impeccable taste! How do I know this? You have volunteered to write in one of the teeny fandoms that we both love. Ergo - awesome.

Just before we get to the nitty-gritty, just be aware that whatever you write, so long as you've enjoyed it's crafting, I am bound to enjoy it too. So, no pressure on you;)

And if you're here because you are a pinch-hitting superstar - then the above goes for you with bells on.

So, my fandoms, for 2014 are: Sunshine (2007), The Lego Movie (2014), The Matrix (1999) and Gravity (2013)

If you're curious, since this is not my first yuletide (it's my 5th - ai me!;)) - you can find my previous Yuletide letters here: 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010 - so you can have an idea what you're letting yourself in for;)

This is the point where I usually invite you to have a nosey around my lj to see what makes me tick but as I have been monster non-grata this year - that's a bit redundant. Needless to say that I love and adore movies and science fiction and whatever you write will also be loved more than cake.

If you do need a few pointers regarding likes and dislikes the following, I hope, may be useful:

Likes - Plot, character-led stories, friendships, alternative realities where one thing changes, different povs, hugs/cuddling, women characters being awesome and competent, teams equaling families, happy(ish) endings, conversations/banter, films, kisses, laughter, humour, science, teamwork, adventures, slice of life, dancing, joy, life...

Dislikes - I like a lot of things but there are a few hard and fast things I Do Not Like. They are:
Character death, kink, humiliation, partner betrayal, character bashing (especially women characters) porn minus plot, dark themes. Fluffy monster is so *fluffy* you're gonna die (Despicable Me quote ftw!). Yes, I do shed terribly - getting all that fluff out of the carpet is moider!

Ratings - go with what feels right for the story. I trust you, dear writer, so long as it's consensual, sensual and emotionally engaging I am *there*.

I hope that the above is intel enough for you to get cracking. Don't forget that OPTIONAL DETAILS ARE OPTIONAL - I've waffled on about what I love about these films and thrown numerous plot bunnies left right and centre and yet if you have an idea burning deep inside - go for it. So long as you enjoy what you write, I'm going to love it too.

spaceship, spaceship, kung-fu! SPACESHIP! )

I hope this is useful to you but if you'd like more details - ask a hippo for help, be more than happy to fill in the gaps.

And again, thank you

To: The Universe

Subject: Closing the Loop

Dear Universe, as much as I love being out and about and being social and stuff... Can I please have a couple of days to re-charge my batteries and generally tie stuff up in a neat bow? I'm not asking for much - just a day or two at work where there are no demands on my time, bar finishing off projects that are nearly complete bar a few details.

Ditto, my personal life. Being social with family and friends has been awesome as has the London Film Fesitval, but I'd like a day to spend in a local cinema just catching up on movies before [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo eats my life;)

If you can do that I'd be most grateful.

Lots of love,

Your mate,

Beckymonster

Future attractions:

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - I can has an assignment?! YES I CAN!
I always try to do something I've never tried before when it comes to this challenge and this year, it could very well be a doozy. I have to check both my recipient's letter and the canon to see if it's a goer but... I am hopeful and pleased with progress so far.

[livejournal.com profile] pacrimbigbang - well, the good news is, I have a first draft in the can. The bad news is that due to circumstances, I've decided to drop out. Which makes me feel like a heel but I have to be sensible about these things (which is a lot harder than it sounds...) and to put my sanity before 16,000 words of Hot!Dads pron. That's not to say that it won't be finished, it will, it's just it will be at my pace, not someone else's.

London Film Fesitval - yes, I have been watching ALL THE FILMS, so I shall be reporting back. So far, (I have one more to go) I've not seen anything that I would consider a waste of my time, which is good. I have seen a top five film of the year, one that will destroy Tumblr and two that were worth the hassle.
More details to follow.

* * *

So, that's me - how are you guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_dalek_fanfic)
If a story is under 300 words, does it need to be beta'ed?

And if it does - any volunteers for a <300 word Pacific Rim gen piece? Warning - canon Major Character Death mentioned THAT DIDN'T BLOODY HAPPEN!!11!. Denial - not just that river in Eygpt;)

Leave a message in the usual place and thanks in advance

Okay, the icon has nothing to do with the content other than - yay! BUT!!!

First draft of my [livejournal.com profile] pacrimbigbang fic is DONE!

It weighs in at 16,432 words (the qualifying limit is 10,000 words) and while it needs all the work - I have good ideas as to what needs to be nipped, tucked and polished, so I'm hopeful of good things.

We won't talk about the fact that I haven't got an artist and the claims post has been up for 10 days now.... At least I'm not the only one this time

Carry on!
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_calvin_writingWHAT?!)
Hello!

NB - apologies for not getting this finished for the release of assignments - life has been all flavours of crazy recently. But have at it and most of all, enjoy yourself.

My fandoms are: Sunshine (2007), The Wolverine (2013), Alien (1979) and Indiana Jones Series

These are my previous years letters - 2012, 2011 and 2010 - so you can have an idea what you're letting yourself in for;) And yes, I keep asking for one of them as one year, it's going to happen!! (ahem;))

Feel free to have a nosey around my journal - I've not been as 'present' this year as I have been in years past - but hopefully you'll get a flavour of what sort of weirdo I am.

Okay - onto the Likes and Dislikes portion of the letter.

The 'Yes Please!' list includes - Plot, character-led stories, friendships, alternative realities where one thing changes, hugs/cuddling, women characters being awesome and competent, teams equaling families, happy(ish) endings, conversations/banter, films, kisses, laughter, humour, science, teamwork, adventures, slice of life, dancing, joy, life...

If you want to go down the sexyteims route - sensuality is key as is emotional engagement and consent among adults too. My strongest leaning is towards m/m, quite happy with het but I'm afraid that f/f does nothing for me. Be far happier with female friendships, if that's okay with you.

The 'No Thank You' list - Character death*, kink, humiliation, partner betrayal, character bashing (especially women characters) porn minus plot, dark themes*. Fluffy monster is so *fluffy* you're gonna die (Despicable Me quote ftw!)

*With Alien feel free to give yourself some wiggle room, although, please, no darker than the film went as that film pretty much encapsulates my limits for gore/blood.

A Quick Word From Our Sponsors Re Ratings - Note – if you, awesome writer, can’t ‘do’ romance (het, slash or poly as the prompt suggests - or not) I would lovelovelove (more than cake!) Gen fic.

Details and Waffle for Sunshine(2007), Alien (1979), The Wolverine (2013) and The Indiana Jones Series )

Needless to say, whatever you write for me in any of the fandoms I've requested, I'm sure to love more than cake!

So - there you go!
beckymonster: Becky icon (general_stephen hawking movies rec)
I keep meaning to post on a regular basis but... as with everything else, Real Life laughs hysterically at such plans. However as it's the Father Unit's birthday, there is cake, so there is a sort of balance.

- Work - is a disaster of epic proportions. And that's all I have to say on the matter right now. Just don't 'kaythanxbai.

- Writing - [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! I've nominated Sunshine (2007), John Carter (2012), Alien (1979) and The Wolverine (2013) for this year. I'm not quite sure if I'm going to ask for all of them but it really depends on whether they're all accepted or not.

- [livejournal.com profile] pacrimbigbang - is nearly at 6k! No, I don't learn but it is *only* 10k after all. Believe that, I have a bridge to sell you...

- I don't have a title and boy am I glad that this is only the first draft because I am going to need to REDRAFT ALL THE THINGS before too long.

- Also t's so far in 'not-just-a-river-in-Eygpt' territory that it's scary but hey!I get to imagine this guy naked so... yup!

- I'm seeing four films at the London Film Festival this year. I would have made it six but there was an almighty bugger up with the system, so four it is. Twelve Years A Slave, Jorodosky's Dune, The Congress and Locke. Which is not a bad haul at all.

- The BFI have announced the line up for their 'Gothic' Season - it only covers October and November but just after a cursory look through I was going 'I'd like to see that, I'd love to see that...' and I'm not even a horror nerd. Horror nerds I do know think Christmas has come early! I can see some strategising in my future....

- TV. As in I'm watching some! I have Orphan Black piling up on the ol' DVR and I still have Agents of SHIELD to programme in. Though I do wish that the rest of the Internet would realise that there are other countries than the US and we don't get the same programmes on the same day as everyone else. In short? SPOILER WARNINGS PEOPLE!! My flist are awesome but Twitter and the internet in general is not.

Grumble.

Anyhow - that's me - How Are You Guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_hungergames_odds)
I've achieved nearly *everything* on my 'To Do' list for today... which doesn't usually happen! Okay, I think I might be less surprised by this if I hadn't had to face the horrors of automated phone services!

If there is a more heinous scourge on humanity than those, I've yet to meet it! Anyhow - I still have one thing I have to face them down over... It can wait until tomorrow.

* * *

Still mulling over my choices for London Film Festival - now taking into consideration mundane things like 'logistics'. Still surprised that with a birthday, a wedding and possibly one of the busiest periods of my year all colliding with the LFF - I may (if the goddess of geeks smiles on me! the ticket sale is a bit of a bunfight!) get to see the following:
12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Jodorowsky's Dune, Only Lovers Left Alive and Locke.

Tickets go on sale on Thursday, so will keep you all posted.

* * *

In more fannish news, I'm writing! Both 'work' stuff and 'not!work' stuff. I wish I could say more at the moment but once I have the current, talky/exposition scene in the bag, then maybe I'll say something more.

* * *

Hope you guys are good!
beckymonster: Becky icon (Books_discworld hexcheese)
Add 'best hotels in Hong Kong' to the list of 'Things I Have Researched'. If you ever need this tidbit - The Peninsula Hotel is the way to go.

* * *

And now for a Random Memo.

To: My Muse
From: Me

Can we please STOP re-writing the beginning of this big bang story?! I know it lays the foundations for the rest of the tale. And yes, I think I have the ending in mind but let's get on with the good stuff in the middle?!

Lots of love

* * *

Shenanigans are going on at work. Exacerbated by the fact that yes, it's the beginning of a new academic year; which means that I have another tour or two to do before I get my spiel down to pat. It's amazing what you forget if you don't have to do it for a couple of weeks...

* * *

Tomorrow sees the announcement of the line up for this year's London Film Festival.

So prepare for waffle on films I'd like to go see. Grumbling because I can't go see most of them (I have a wedding and a birthday party to attend on the Saturdays of the fest) and let's not forget the costs involved too.

Woe betied if I hear any 'critic' complain about their lot.... Short version - press accreditation now costs £36 - which may buy you two tickets to a West End screening - three if you're out on Southbank. Also if said critics want to catch the press screenings of all the films - they have to use a public cinema, namely Cineworld Shaftesbury Ave - which is not the most 'glamorous' cinema in London. To say that one is 'unimpressed' is an understatement!

* * *

Hoping for a better day tomorrow. It is a good hope.
beckymonster: Becky icon (art_universe_came)
Does anyone know where I can find an Aussie-picker? Add this to the list entitled 'Things I Have Researched For Fic'.

I know I should make life easIER on myself by using the canon British Character as the main voice but... there you go.

* * *

In related news... Casting has been announced for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
Call me utterly *crazy* but given the 'quality' of some of the names that this project is attracting - this might be okay. I'll explain my reasoning...

From what I've read of the book (I didn't get far at all - the whole 'inner goddess' schtick got very old, very fast!) it needs the same thing that Tolkien needed (and I can hear [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen and [livejournal.com profile] celandineb sputtering all the way over here;)) - a damn good editor who's prepared to fillet out the crud and keep the good stuff.

Tolkien had that in Jackson, Boyens and Walsh for the trilogy. The Prestige is only half the book that Christopher Priest wrote and it's (arguably) one of Christopher Nolan's finest films. So - I'm a *very* long way off of 'cautiously optimistic' but I'm not writing it off yet.

* * *

For those of you who may have missed this - some of the 'new' rules for Yuletide' have been (thankfully) scrapped. Leading to much rejoicing in the land.

FWIW - I'm thinking of nominating the following: Alien (1979), The Wolverine (2013), Sunshine (2007). There may be a 4th, but I can't think of it right now. These are my definite *wants*.

* * *

File under 'useful to someone' - Bleeding Cool is reporting that Agents Of SHIELD will begin showing in the US on 24/9 and the UK on 27/9 - which is a Friday. How this will work out in the long run is *anyone's* guess.

* * *

One class done - (seemingly) 500 still left to do!;)
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_hhgttg_ohnoes!)
Yes, I'm as surprised as you are!

To help get over the shock - Signal Boost: Channel 4 (in the UK) have purchased Agents Of SHIELD. Not much is known right now but this is a Good Thing and above all... COULSON LIVES!

* * *

Every year, London Zoo weighs it's animals - here - have photos. My favourite has to be Tammy the Anteater #TeamBringIt.

And at the other end of the spectrum - James Cameron says that it's 'inevitable' that all entertainment will be in 3D ahahahaha! no.

* * *

Next entry into the annals of 'Things I have looked up for Fan Fic' - Bulldogs, The Aussie Air Force, advice for dogs flying on planes. Yes, they are all related.

As is this -

The Pacific Rim theme played on Chinese instruments - well worth a listen!

On the same (ish!) subject.... I should have fic to share soon! Torchwood fic! Or to be more precise *crossover*. It's written and it's gone to beta, so with luck... I might actually have (gosh, shock HORROR) proper content!

* * *

I've downloaded the first episode of Welcome To Night Vale. Will report back when I've listened to it.

* * *

So... how are you guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (general_cat ZOMG!!)
Surprised kitty is surprised by two posts in three days. Can't say as I blame it;)

* * *

I have a *thing* that needs looking over. Mainly for spelling & grammar; but if you've seen both Torchwood and Zero Dark Thirty a) congratulations on having such eclectic taste! and b) you'll get the gist!

Leave a comment etc.

* * *

In other news, I think I should start up a list entitled 'Things I Have Researched In The Name of FanFic'.
In the last couple of days, it would include:
- The calendar for the year 2025
- The BBC World Service and how they announce the News
- Air Force One
- English Bulldogs
- Austrailian Meat Pies might also make the cut but I have that information from when I was doing research on an Inception fic from way back when. The perils of being a librarian - you remember *everything* and if you don't... you have to look it up.

* * *

To be filed under 'Stuff that makes me spitting mad':

The (London) Guardian - 'David Miranda, schedule 7 and the danger that all reporters now face' - the basics of the story are that the partner of the Guardian journo, who broke the Snowden case, a Brazilian citizen, was held at Heathrow for nine hours, under 'terrorism' laws but not charged.

The UK has many things going for it - freedom of speech enshrined by law ain't one of them as this case shows. 'Horrified' springs to mind.

Also - LJ is borking my coding - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! EDIT - as we say at work... there is an issue between the keyboard and the chair! ooops...

And now for 'Stuff that makes me very happy'

Which would be links to Neil Gaiman speaking about him writing another Doctor Who episode; Travis Beacham (writer of Pacific Rim) speaking about his joy at what his little creation has wrought and the comment that the film is edging over the 400 million mark regarding Box Office takings - which is a hell of a chunk of change and may signal a sequel. May please, O great goddess of geeks! Carry on.

If anyone sees any 'Hot Dads From Pacific Rim' icons, send 'em my way... Yeah, I think the 'new fandom klaxon' went off *weeks* ago and I didn't notice it... ahem!

And on that note - I shall leave y'all in peace!
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_dalek_fanfic)
Just not today...

So, yeah! Still here - about to embark on something really stupid but then again... what else is new?

More details when possible!

Hope you guys are all aokay
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_dalek_fanfic)
So - yes, the state of the Fannish [livejournal.com profile] becky_monster

Doctor Who and I are having a trial separation. The last block of episodes were just 'meh' to me. The Neil Gaiman episode was good but... the spark has gone. And as for Matt Smith leaving the show? That was the sign that I'm not in love with Who the way I once was. I don't do well with regenerations - the media speculation is enough to make any sane person run for the hills - and then there is the whole wrench of saying goodbye to one favourite and getting used to the new one.

That and I'll freely admit that I never have gotten over Nine and that was EIGHT BLOODY YEARS AGO!

*cough*

I'll watch the Christmas episode and will likely cry because despite the last season, I've loved Eleven but Twelve has to be something pretty flipping special to invoke the fannishness of before.

* * *

X-Men Movieverse - am taking a mental health break from this fandom(s) for the time being. As much as have I loved writing in these universe(s) - I think I (or rather, my muse) need more time to recharge our proverbial batteries before undertaking anything else in this universe. Given that The Wolverine opens ten days... who knows. Not to mention that I am following Bryan Singer on twitter, who has a rather wonderful habit of posting behind the scenes pics from X-Men: Days of Future Past out, which makes me incredibly gleeful at the best of times; so that is bringing me hope... and now I can 'hear' Sir Ian McKellen reciting one of the speeches from the first film in my head... help

That's not to say that I'm not writing - I am... or at least I'm trying to! I wish I could say more but... allow me to show rather than tell, deal?

* * *

So, that's me - in all my weirdness - how about you guys?

And if any of yous are on twitter - I'm becky_monster there too - please feel free to follow (but please yell so I can follow back!)
beckymonster: Becky icon (Books_discworld hexcheese)
I'M STILL HERE!

That is, if anyone is actually reading my drivel... Anyhow - I'm here, I'm posting so now is as good a time as to fill in what's going on, albeit in bullet points.

- Spock passed his MOT! Okay - he had to have this windscreen wipers changed but ZOMG! he passed!! I have never had a car pass it's MOT on the first attempt in the coughtwentyoddcough years I've been driving.

- It's summer and boy howdy is the weather making up for the appalling winter the UK had in 2012/13. Being a monster who prefers temperate climes (this is what you get when you're half Irish!) I'm not doing brilliantly in any environment that does not include shade *and* air con. The worst thing? According to the weather peeps it should stay like this for another week or so. All those stereotypes about we Brits and the weather? All true! All of them!

- Movies I have seen in recent months that I have loved and would recommend to all and sundry include: Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel and Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim even on first showing has now made it's way onto the 'Films-To-Show-Shinzon-When-He's-Old-Enough' list. Yes, it really is *that* awesome!

- Fannishly... the really short version is that I'm not at the moment. The longer version needs another post... Which I'll do in a moment.
beckymonster: Becky icon (art_nameicon!)
So, I have decided to take the plunge and do the XMFC Bingo this year. Have never done a bingo card - so first time and all that. This is the card:

AU: rom com anal sex time travel (to the future) role reversal pining
jealousy AU: ballet/dancers backstory (Riptide) Charles/Wesley Angel and Raven
Erik's massive cock AU: noir wildcard crossdressing backstory (Angel)
Erik and/or Mystique bonds with old Hellfire Club members AU: spies/secret agents AU: Victorian Darwin back from the dead(!) BAMF!Darwin
McKellen!Erik/Stewart!Charles/Fassbender!Erik/McAvoy!Charles AU: genosha AU: frat boys bearstd>
AU: prostitution

There is plenty for me to work with here - I don't know if I would be able to do *all* of them but I should be able to pull a bingo or two out of this...

Any tips from more practiced hands at this sort of thing?!

Still...

Feb. 19th, 2013 08:26 pm
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_hhgttg_ohnoes!)
Here.

Writing.

Watching Movies.

Reading My Friends Page.

Very, very boring. So what else is new?
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_stargate)
So, the thing I thought I was 'supposed' to be doing (that is posting my [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang fic) yesterday? *Should* be happening on 1st February instead. Which is a good thing as I've just gone and added another 1,100 words to it.

Oops.

So, yeah - I now have to throw myself at the mercy of my beta reader to read through it before bolting it onto the other 36,000 odd words. Again, no typos - the story is really *that* long!

* * *

In happier news - as I am sure *everyone* knows right now: Doctor Who returns on Easter Saturday/30th March.

Which is right and good because just like Christmas brings a new episode - Easter brings the new series. Now, the next question is, will there be a mass gathering of fans to watch the new episode in London this year?!

* * *

I really will get around to posting about the films I'm looking forward to this year, at some point. When I do - chances are, this one will be on the list - Teaser Poster for Trance, the new film by Danny Boyle and it's due out at the end of March too!
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_gay stories)

Pacific Rim trailer - which I saw in front of The Hobbit, with zero warning that I might be seeing it. Yes, I'm sure that the people sitting next to me thought I was deranged.

Is it July Yet?!

* * *

So, counting out the fics I have currently on the go:

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant has been posted and my recipient liked it! \o/

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - both a story and a treat are in\o/\o/\o/. I have another on the go - wanting to get that done asap because....

[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang 1st draft is DONE. Final word count - over 40,000 words. No that is NOT a typo. I haven't done anything with it since finishing, which means that I have to go back and wrestle it into shape. Thankfully I have *ideas* as to what needs re-writing/tweaking/cutting but still... it's by far the longest thing I've ever written.

Now I just have to get it finished (ahahah!) and posted. And did I mention that I'm toying with the idea of a 'sister' story?
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_x-men_charles&erik)
So - picture the scene...

Our brave heroine, who is writing like it's going out of fashion to make her words for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo for the day. It also helps that these words will get her to the 'good bits' of her [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story. Denouments and all that jazz...

She goes to her friends page to find the relevant entry and sees the following...

Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart to star in X-Men: Days of Future Past alongside Michael Fassbender and James MacAvoy.

Our heroine's first thought? 'Naaaaahhhh,' then upon reading Bryan Singer's confirmatory tweets - ZOMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEE! FLAIL!

So yeah - there went me getting anymore writing done this evening! I have committed 493 words so far, which is a good number but I really wanted more but... this! be still my fangirl glee!

I was looking forward to this movie - although I've never read the original comics, when Matthew Vaughn left, I was nervous, perfectly understandable as we could have ended up with another Brett Ratner (pitoo!) but then Bryan Singer stepped in and I was much pleased. And no this.... eeeeee! Although - I will give £5 to Stonewall if Sir Ian makes a reference to this movie in interviews because you know he will, although I can vouch that he's done something similar in the name of Art too and daymn Mystique is one lucky lady. So's her brother.

So... Is It Summer 2014 yet?! How About Now?!
beckymonster: Becky icon (dw_timelord_nine)
2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011

Yes, traditional post is very traditional!

In addendum to the usual things (family, fandom, job, creativity, friends, films etc.) I'd like to add the NHS to that list too. For Reasons.

Oh and I'm 545 words off 30,000 words for my [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story. That's not so much giving thanks as being scared silly!

So whatever you, oh lovely flist are doing today - have fun, don't argue and save some pie for the rest of us;)
