I keep meaning to post on a regular basis but... as with everything else, Real Life laughs hysterically at such plans. However as it's the Father Unit's birthday, there is cake, so there is a sort of balance.

- Work - is a disaster of epic proportions. And that's all I have to say on the matter right now. Just don't 'kaythanxbai.

- Writing - [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! I've nominated Sunshine (2007), John Carter (2012), Alien (1979) and The Wolverine (2013) for this year. I'm not quite sure if I'm going to ask for all of them but it really depends on whether they're all accepted or not.

- [livejournal.com profile] pacrimbigbang - is nearly at 6k! No, I don't learn but it is *only* 10k after all. Believe that, I have a bridge to sell you...

- I don't have a title and boy am I glad that this is only the first draft because I am going to need to REDRAFT ALL THE THINGS before too long.

- Also t's so far in 'not-just-a-river-in-Eygpt' territory that it's scary but hey!I get to imagine this guy naked so... yup!

- I'm seeing four films at the London Film Festival this year. I would have made it six but there was an almighty bugger up with the system, so four it is. Twelve Years A Slave, Jorodosky's Dune, The Congress and Locke. Which is not a bad haul at all.

- The BFI have announced the line up for their 'Gothic' Season - it only covers October and November but just after a cursory look through I was going 'I'd like to see that, I'd love to see that...' and I'm not even a horror nerd. Horror nerds I do know think Christmas has come early! I can see some strategising in my future....

- TV. As in I'm watching some! I have Orphan Black piling up on the ol' DVR and I still have Agents of SHIELD to programme in. Though I do wish that the rest of the Internet would realise that there are other countries than the US and we don't get the same programmes on the same day as everyone else. In short? SPOILER WARNINGS PEOPLE!! My flist are awesome but Twitter and the internet in general is not.

Grumble.

Anyhow - that's me - How Are You Guys?

Does anyone know where I can find an Aussie-picker? Add this to the list entitled 'Things I Have Researched For Fic'.

I know I should make life easIER on myself by using the canon British Character as the main voice but... there you go.

* * *

In related news... Casting has been announced for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
Call me utterly *crazy* but given the 'quality' of some of the names that this project is attracting - this might be okay. I'll explain my reasoning...

From what I've read of the book (I didn't get far at all - the whole 'inner goddess' schtick got very old, very fast!) it needs the same thing that Tolkien needed (and I can hear [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen and [livejournal.com profile] celandineb sputtering all the way over here;)) - a damn good editor who's prepared to fillet out the crud and keep the good stuff.

Tolkien had that in Jackson, Boyens and Walsh for the trilogy. The Prestige is only half the book that Christopher Priest wrote and it's (arguably) one of Christopher Nolan's finest films. So - I'm a *very* long way off of 'cautiously optimistic' but I'm not writing it off yet.

* * *

For those of you who may have missed this - some of the 'new' rules for Yuletide' have been (thankfully) scrapped. Leading to much rejoicing in the land.

FWIW - I'm thinking of nominating the following: Alien (1979), The Wolverine (2013), Sunshine (2007). There may be a 4th, but I can't think of it right now. These are my definite *wants*.

* * *

File under 'useful to someone' - Bleeding Cool is reporting that Agents Of SHIELD will begin showing in the US on 24/9 and the UK on 27/9 - which is a Friday. How this will work out in the long run is *anyone's* guess.

* * *

One class done - (seemingly) 500 still left to do!;)
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_hhgttg_ohnoes!)
Yes, I'm as surprised as you are!

To help get over the shock - Signal Boost: Channel 4 (in the UK) have purchased Agents Of SHIELD. Not much is known right now but this is a Good Thing and above all... COULSON LIVES!

* * *

Every year, London Zoo weighs it's animals - here - have photos. My favourite has to be Tammy the Anteater #TeamBringIt.

And at the other end of the spectrum - James Cameron says that it's 'inevitable' that all entertainment will be in 3D ahahahaha! no.

* * *

Next entry into the annals of 'Things I have looked up for Fan Fic' - Bulldogs, The Aussie Air Force, advice for dogs flying on planes. Yes, they are all related.

As is this -

The Pacific Rim theme played on Chinese instruments - well worth a listen!

On the same (ish!) subject.... I should have fic to share soon! Torchwood fic! Or to be more precise *crossover*. It's written and it's gone to beta, so with luck... I might actually have (gosh, shock HORROR) proper content!

* * *

I've downloaded the first episode of Welcome To Night Vale. Will report back when I've listened to it.

* * *

So... how are you guys?

Immortals - Well, that was extraordinarily pretty to look at! Liked the rather 'stylised' callbacks to the myths. And naturally, the male nudity. Yet... It left me a little cold and I'm not quite sure why...

In Time - love the idea. Just not too sure about the execution. Cillian Murphy acted everyone off the screen mind. And in black leather too (swoon!)

Nosferatu - I remember seeing a clip of this when I was a wee!monster... Scared the crap outta me. Now? Erm.... For an early horror that was quite *something* Quite what, is another question entirely! It looks beautiful, is relatively faithful to the source novel (Stoker's Dracula) but the acting... Oh dear.

* * *

And in other news - still alive, hand-in *hell* at work, determinedly plodding onwards with [livejournal.com profile] yuletide - about 70% done (unless someone decides to pull a fast one...), plotting the third redraft of [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant in my head, going to see the Dark Knight Rises teaser on Wednesday, need to write a snotty letter to the contact lens people for screwing me around again #firstworldproblems and wrap the Christmas presents....

Anything I've forgotten?

Oh yes... Scandal In Belgravia (aka the first episode of the new series of Sherlock (2010)) is utterly amazing. Do Not Let Anyone Spoil It For You. Trust me on this;)

Family and other disasters
Sister #2 is due to have her baby on 4th October. Current intel suggests that date may be wrong, as in it might be sooner rather than later but... Still have no idea what zie will be (other than a baby) but I look forward to meeting them.

The rest of the family are as ever. Utterly nuts but in a good way.

TV
I think I have only caught one epsiode of Doctor Who as it's been aired this half of the season. I think it's called 'Having A Life' but I have not had confirmation on this phenomena yet.
Other than that - there is nothing else that is tickling the ol' fancy. Other than a desire to watch the '79 version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Which I saw at the cinema last night and came out *this* close to wanting to ask for it for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. Review (and flailing) to follow.

I also re-watched the '06 version of Jane Eyre recently as well. Something to do with falling in love with the '11 version (yes, I'm asking for Jane/Rochester fic for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, please try not to faint!)
Did anyone else notice that the young Jane in that is the same lass who played Lucy in The Chronicles of Narnia (2005)?. Which given that her Mr Tumnus was Xavier to the '11's Rochester's Magneto... amused me *greatly*. Also, review (and flailing) for Jane Eyre (2011) also to follow.

Fandom Fings
I daresn't say this too loudly but... I've been 'productive' this week. Trust me, no one is more surprised than me by this. Admittedly it's a drabble (with a longer story to follow) and about 500 words of one part of a Five Things fic (which will be the size fo the Death Star if I ever finish it) but it's words that are nothing to do with film reviews! YAY! (mumbles 'Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...' to self)

Films
I will do a proper movies post soon(ish) - needless to say, both Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Jane Eyre (2011) are both superb films worth your time. Although can someone let up on all the films coming out at once please? There are only so many hours in a week!

Also, my London Film Festival tickets have come through. So [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen I hope you weren't joking about Coriolanus because I has two tickets... As well as one for The Artist, Shame and the 'Surprise Film' as well.
[livejournal.com profile] vayshti? What do you and the PLB have?

And that is all I have right now - So, tell me, how are you guys?

Yes, I'm *still* being incredibly boring. What else is new?

I've been remiss in my TV watching (haven't seen Being Human since the first episode of this season, nor have I seen the first episode of Wonders of the Universe), so please... no spoilers!

I will catch up - it's just going to take a while!

I have been keeping up with my movie watching, mind. Boring I may be, but when I stop going to the cinema is the day that you guys can start siccing the men in white coats on me!

With regards to the whole '101 films in 2011' shebang - it's puttering along. I just *don't' think that I can write for everything that I go see. Or at least I can't write 100 words. A sentence or two yes, but unless we're talking about... Inception or 28 Days Later it *shouldn't take that long to write about... (yes, delusional monster is delusional!)

So - yes, to the challenge - not so much to the writing about *everything* because sometimes all I can summon up is 'that was alright'.

Who knows, it might get me to post a little more *often*;)

Which explains why I haven't been posting around these 'ere parts for a while. The most 'interesting' things (that do *not* involve movies) I have been doing recently have been trying out a new contact lens make (verdict - owowowow) and buying books (for myself).

Not that this is incentive for anyone or anything to make my life 'interesting' by any means. I like *boring*. It's just that it doesn't make for good blogging!

***

On the subject of books - whomever has been raving about The Hunger Games... thank you. I read the first book in about four days. Which is damn good going. The other two are now on order from Amazon.

For those of you considering reading these - I'd recommend the first one certainly. And no one spoil me, please.

***

On the subject of books - I'm currently reading Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovich. I'm two chapters in and... I think the best way I can describe it is one part Hot Fuzz (alas minus the homoeroticism) and three parts The Dresden Files.

I fear that I may be reaching for my next book before too long - which is a good thing. Will report back when I finish it.

***

Changing the subject to music for a moment - does anyone have a *legal* copy of The Black Hole soundtrack that can be loaded onto a computer? It's asking for a lot, I know, as the only copy I can find is on US iTunes (which, being from the UK, is as much use as a chocolate fireguard!) but I thought I'd ask.

On a similar note - Pictures of the packaging for the 'Tron: Legacy' Blu-ray/DVD. WANT!

***

Time for a random photo snurched from Twitter (three good guesses *who* one of the subjects is...) The Old and New faces of TV astronomy.

Also - related to the above (especially if you think like *me*) The captions say these are photos from CERN - I'd say the Grid from 'Tron' meself!

***

Related to the above (again!) - Wonders Of The Universe starts on Sunday 6th March at 9pm. Which means that it's on the same time as Being Human for two episodes. Thank the Flying Spagetti Monster for BBC iPlayer and DVRs! Also, if anyone can choose what to watch and what to tape from those two - congratulations! you are a better person than me. Trufax.

***

*Still* on the subject of telly (paging [livejournal.com profile] nialla42!)- Hawaii Five O (2010) - yay or nay?. It, too, is on at 9pm, Sunday on Sky One, so is it one to have a looky-loo (most likely through catch up services - it's the BAFTAS next week. Or rather Inception plays the bridesmaid *again*) or no?

Murray Gold - composer of awesome music and highly amusing and relevant! tweets - never change!

Also? Reading twitter reactions to X-Factor is far more interesting than watching the damn thing. After all, no one suggests that body snatching aliens are among us while watching Strictly Come Dancing. Or do they?

*

Did I mention I get to see the Doctor Who Christmas Special tomorrow evening? Yes, the 2010 one with Eleven. If you want the other ticket - you're going to have to fight [livejournal.com profile] torn_eledhwen for it. Which is something I wouldn't recommend... it won't end well.
I have already been threatened with fates worse than death from the family if I dare say a thing so... I'll tell you all about it - after 7pm on 25/12!

Writing Update
Redraft of the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story has been compteled. Just waiting for the off to send to beta. I am aiming to get this sent next weekend. If nothing else - the quicker I get this uploaded, the quicker I get to see Tron: Legacy.

Attack of the priorities y/y?

Redraft of the [livejournal.com profile] incept_santa story. Um.... yes... it's progressing. It's also shrinking but that's a *good* thing.

Anyone who wants to beta? A basic knowledge of the film (i.e. who's who and an idea of what's going on... or what you think is going on!) is useful. Need a grammar check more than anything else.
Leave a message after the beep.

- I cannot write porn to save my life. Or rather if I try, the muse just shuts the hell up. If I write a gen piece with a few people standing around chatting, then I write like it's going out of fashion.
Now watch as the words dry up

- Inception is nomming on my brain. Or rather the bits that haven't been devoured by my [livejournal.com profile] tw_bigbang story. (17,000 words and counting...!)
I have no defense other than it's awesome and intelligent and beautiful (hallo thar Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Ken Watanabe!) and- I like it a lot!
Consider this a warning that there may very well be fic in the future. Post BB, naturally!

- Sherlock has been delightful. If you haven't already caught up with this, either through iPlayer or *ahemhem* then do so. It's not something I can see myself being fannish over but enjoyable nonetheless. What with this, Being Human, Wonders of the Solar System, Modern Masters and Doctor Who, the BBC are certainly worth every penny of the license fee. Why, yes, that *was* a political statement!

- Even though I only use my twitter account to read other people's tweets (people like Steven Moffat, Professor Brian Cox Empire and Maryann Johanson of FlickFilosopher), I have two people following me. Oookay!

- Having attended the Doctor Who Prom this year (very short review: it was awesome!) I just wanted to point out two things. 'Mars' by Holst gave me goosebumps and with the release of this 2 disc CD in September can sob your heart out over 'Vale Deceum' too. But hey! My mascara stayed put - win win!

- I have a dress for my sister's wedding! More importantly it meets with the approval of both the bride and MY MOTHER! It's the purple/aubergine one. The photo doesn't quite do it justice - it's a bit darker in RL. Most surprising aspect about it? it was the first dress I tried. This is astonishing as I'm a lot shorter and dumpier than the model - so I was expecting to look like a sack of spuds. Instead I can has an hourglass figure! I may not be exactly Christina Hendricks but daymn!

Suffice to say that major rows were expected over this aspect of the wedding, so to get this sewn up so damn quickly (and easily!) is a joy. Naturally, it will be worn for work after the event as it's smart enough for teaching in as well as the wedding. And for any other weddings I may have that I can get away with wearing it to!
It's not an exact match colourwise for the bridal dresses (the bridesmaids are wearing Royal/Cadbury purple) but it's the right colour family. Which is nice (and appropriate)!

- I should be a bit more prolific on this 'ere lj. I am not sure what for the love of Mr Spock! I'm going to talk about but there will be *something*! And I promise not to fall off the planet - again! famous last words!

- So - how are yous guys?
