I keep meaning to post on a regular basis but... as with everything else, Real Life laughs hysterically at such plans. However as it's the Father Unit's birthday, there is cake, so there is a sort of balance.

- Work - is a disaster of epic proportions. And that's all I have to say on the matter right now. Just don't 'kaythanxbai.

- Writing - [livejournal.com profile] yuletide! I've nominated Sunshine (2007), John Carter (2012), Alien (1979) and The Wolverine (2013) for this year. I'm not quite sure if I'm going to ask for all of them but it really depends on whether they're all accepted or not.

- [livejournal.com profile] pacrimbigbang - is nearly at 6k! No, I don't learn but it is *only* 10k after all. Believe that, I have a bridge to sell you...

- I don't have a title and boy am I glad that this is only the first draft because I am going to need to REDRAFT ALL THE THINGS before too long.

- Also t's so far in 'not-just-a-river-in-Eygpt' territory that it's scary but hey!I get to imagine this guy naked so... yup!

- I'm seeing four films at the London Film Festival this year. I would have made it six but there was an almighty bugger up with the system, so four it is. Twelve Years A Slave, Jorodosky's Dune, The Congress and Locke. Which is not a bad haul at all.

- The BFI have announced the line up for their 'Gothic' Season - it only covers October and November but just after a cursory look through I was going 'I'd like to see that, I'd love to see that...' and I'm not even a horror nerd. Horror nerds I do know think Christmas has come early! I can see some strategising in my future....

- TV. As in I'm watching some! I have Orphan Black piling up on the ol' DVR and I still have Agents of SHIELD to programme in. Though I do wish that the rest of the Internet would realise that there are other countries than the US and we don't get the same programmes on the same day as everyone else. In short? SPOILER WARNINGS PEOPLE!! My flist are awesome but Twitter and the internet in general is not.

Grumble.

Anyhow - that's me - How Are You Guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_Hobbes back)
A 'I've been stomped on by a Kaiju' sort of day. I've been doing what I do for 20 years (training and working) in about three weeks and for the last 18 odd years, it's been worth all the hassle and grief. Now? I'm not so sure.

* * *

In happier news - The line up for the London Film Festival has been announced. I've had a chance to have a good look through the line up and by my reckoning there are about 8 odd films that I want to see.

Which considering I only made two (and the surprise film) last year - this is saying a lot. Also add in these are films I can actually *attend* given that I have a hyper-busy teaching schedule, a wedding and a birthday party to attend during the 10 days that the festival is running... this feat approaches astonishing!

We shall not speak of the spreadsheet I've created to organise all of this (it exists). Now I just have to do battle with the box office to buy them all but it will be better than it was last year. As I was in the doctor's surgery being told 'Yep, you've got Brighton Beach in your gall bladder and hey! you're going to have to have surgery to remove it!'.

Good times!

* * *

Oh and I put in my holiday card for the 'BIG' holiday I'm going on next year. It may have been a day to forget but there have been some silver linings. Not many but one or two.
beckymonster: Becky icon (Books_discworld hexcheese)
Add 'best hotels in Hong Kong' to the list of 'Things I Have Researched'. If you ever need this tidbit - The Peninsula Hotel is the way to go.

* * *

And now for a Random Memo.

To: My Muse
From: Me

Can we please STOP re-writing the beginning of this big bang story?! I know it lays the foundations for the rest of the tale. And yes, I think I have the ending in mind but let's get on with the good stuff in the middle?!

Lots of love

* * *

Shenanigans are going on at work. Exacerbated by the fact that yes, it's the beginning of a new academic year; which means that I have another tour or two to do before I get my spiel down to pat. It's amazing what you forget if you don't have to do it for a couple of weeks...

* * *

Tomorrow sees the announcement of the line up for this year's London Film Festival.

So prepare for waffle on films I'd like to go see. Grumbling because I can't go see most of them (I have a wedding and a birthday party to attend on the Saturdays of the fest) and let's not forget the costs involved too.

Woe betied if I hear any 'critic' complain about their lot.... Short version - press accreditation now costs £36 - which may buy you two tickets to a West End screening - three if you're out on Southbank. Also if said critics want to catch the press screenings of all the films - they have to use a public cinema, namely Cineworld Shaftesbury Ave - which is not the most 'glamorous' cinema in London. To say that one is 'unimpressed' is an understatement!

* * *

Hoping for a better day tomorrow. It is a good hope.
beckymonster: Becky icon (books_hhgttg_ohnoes!)
So, I, er, fell off the planet for a few days... Same stuff, different week.

* * *

Welcome To Night Vale has piqued my curiosity. I'm still ploughing through the podcasts (I think my last one was 'A Story About You') and it gets both a recommendation and thumbs up from me.

I don't know so much 'All Hail The Glowing Cloud' but all hail [livejournal.com profile] nialla42 as she only ever recommends the good stuff.

* * *

In other news - my family is 'growing'. Sibling Unit 3 is getting married and we've been 'adopted' by a stray (not feral) cat, who has the bossiest meow going and will happily eat zie's own body weight in wet food given half a chance. The family are calling zie 'Midnight' - I think 'Noisy Hoover' would be better... even though that makes zie sound like a Jaeger.

* * *

It's the start of the new academic year tomorrow. Let it be better than the last in some ways please!

And in 'Other Signs That It's Autumn/Fall' - here is the schedule and opening gambits for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. Now begins the 'oh gawd - what am I going to *ask* for this year' angst. Other than Sunshine (2007) - because I always ask for that and ONE YEAR I WILL GET MY FIC!!!.

*ahem*. Carry on!

* * *

That's me - how are you guys?

Three good guesses what I've been watching (and reading up on) for the last two (or so) weeks? It's possibly the one time (apart from major Rugby Union tourneys) that I actually pay any attention to sport. Add in the small fact that one of the first houses I remember living in was a stones throw from the Stratford Olympic site and there are some personal reasons for getting into the Games so much.

Apart from watching all the sports - especially the interesting ones that aren't football, one of the main highlights was, for me, Danny Boyle's astoundingly beautiful and moving Opening Ceremony which will be 're-cut' and released as a DVD. Might have to buy that.

Still on an Olympics kick - 2020 Olympic (Movie) Cities Posters - 'Metropolis', 'Gotham' and 'San Angeles' are real stand outs.

* * *

In other news... Still 'quiet' at work, with 'quiet' meaning that (nearly all) the students are all on holiday. That doesn't mean that it's quiet for me - there's a major building project going on, not to mention major upgrades of All The Technology into the bargain.
Still, I have two weeks of leave to take before the new start of term, so there is that.

* * *

My movie going has been a little quiet as of late - The Dark Knight Rises counts as one my favourite films of the year so far, would even say it's certainly top three. Even so, there hasn't been much else about - what with the Olympics and all that but that will change soon enough.

Other than that... same stuff - different week;)

Trundling forward - or at very least, trying to trundle forward. In a literal sense on Friday as I go to Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Film Festival. They're showing Brave, which, is not released in the UK until mid-August. We may have gotten Avengers and Prometheus a week before the US but this is taking the urine somewhat.

Even so - it's going to be a weekend in one of the loveliest cities I can think of, so there is that.

* * *

In other news - work is undergoing one of it's periodic 're-structures'. Usually the ones who get 're-structured' are the pay grade above me. Not this time, not so much, but the main thing is that I will still have a job and I will get on and re-apply for my professional exams as this time I need to have the paperwork as of my qualifications for my job.

My main reasons for not getting them done before has been that I have had no incentive to get them done (what can I say? I'm goal orientated;)) but now? I have. So, consider this fair warning that there will be whining ahead.

* * *

Mr Spock (my much beloved car) went in for his first MOT test last week. And true to form, for me anyway, he failed. But in comparison to other failures, it was relatively minor (brake pads were worn down - which is a *good* thing!) and not as 'expensive', I've had to buy new cars before!

Could have done with a little more notice regarding the failure - the garage didn't phone and if I hadn't called and just gone to collect the car.... I would have been stranded 20 miles from home, having missed the last bus. Thankfully, the crisis was averted but the meltdown would have been spectacular, mind.

* * *

In more 'fannish' news - currently working on a story for [livejournal.com profile] xmenreversebang - I've not finished it but I am over the lower limit, so it's a goer. The art is a thing of *joy* - it's just a shame that the muse decided to go on a monumental walkabout at the same time. Still - it's words on a page and I'm hoping that more will follow.

Yes, still here.

Yes, seen Avengers Assemble and deemed it to be the best Marvelverse movies so far. Nolan's Bat and the Mutants (1, 2 and First Class) still have the edge, mind.

Other than that - it's Hand In Week this week - so I am keeping out of *everyone's* way. Trust me, it's safer for all that way.

It will be wittier than anything I can come up with!

Given that LJ seems to be having one of it's 'periodic' episodes of playing silly buggers the wobbles, I'd best point out that I can also be found on Twitter as (yes, you've guessed it) becky_monster. Same stuff as you'd find here but with a tad more whinging about some... aspects of my work.

If you know what I do - you can take a good guess at what those 'aspects' are!

* * *

So - some of you may be aware that Cinema Con is taking place in Las Vegas at the moment - yes, this is why the interwebs are all atwitter (literatlly in some cases!) with talk about movies that are coming out this year.
One of the big topics was the use of 48 frames per minute film being used for The Hobbit - the reviews of the medium (not the actual movie itself) have been... underwhelming to say the least. Though to be honest - whether cinema is going to install the tech to show the film at this speed remains to be seen. I know that the BFI IMAX have it as a 'coming soon' - which pleases me greatly but I remain sceptical about the faster frame rate.

The Dark Knight Rises also had a sizzle reel and there will be a new trailer in front of The Avengers Assemble in the US. No news about the rest of the world (likely to be week beginning the 7th) but then again... some areas (like Australia, NZ and the UK) have it opening either today or tomorrow...

Not that I'm rubbing it in or owt! I get to see it on Saturday (which canNOT come soon enough - 6 day week this week - ugh!). I pinky swear not to spoil anyone. And if you *do* want to know those sorts of details - PM me as of Sunday kaithanxbai!

Anyhow have a new trailer for 'Brave'

Altogether now - Is It June/August Yet?!

And on that note - I bid you all a good evening and hope not to take so long in posting again!

Brave (2012) Japanese Trailer With English Subtitles

Regular readers will know that I love and adore Pixar's movies. Yes, even Cars 2 but this... I entreat you all to watch the above and come back here and squee with me.

This could be a thing of wonder and amazement - and that's just her hair!;)

I am hoping against hope that this turns up at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year as I desperately want to see this and waiting until mid-August would be a crime. Because you'll be hearing 'Is It August Yet?! How About Now?!' an awful lot!

* * *

In other news, it's been a busy evening. On top of the usual shenanigans, we seem to have 'gained' a Christian prayer group in the foyer. Complete with a rather large poster. So long as they do not try to 'preach' to the students (or even worse, to the staff. Survivor Of A Catholic Education here!) - live and let live, say I, but I'll talk to the bosses in the morning, all the same.

I've already seen a professional 'comrade' on my flist post this but it bears repeating: No, we cannot just wave magic wands. Would be fun if we could!

This popped up on my twitter feed this morning and I had to share

The artistry of the stop-motion animation is just breathtaking. Not forgetting, all those lovely, lovely books. And even though the 'professional' part of the brain is 'perturbed' by it - I would love to do the colour shelving of books one day;). Wouldn't be able to find a damn thing but it would look so pretty!

For those of you who know the TERROR of me in real life, you may know that I have a thing for weird and wonderful jewellery. Nearly 90% of my collection comes from one London based company - Tatty Devine. They currently have a limited collection of items with Selfridges at present - you can see the full collection here but I just want to point out this piece to my fellow information specialists;)
