The use John Murphy's 'Sunshine' (Adagio in D Minor) as one of the pieces to soundtrack this is on a par with Lux Aeterna for the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Needless to say, that's as coherent as I've managed to be where this trailer has been concerned. I've been stoked for this film since the first *big* casting news was announced but this was like being given a very big cake with a large side order of Ben and Jerry's. We're talking Pacific Rim/ Prometheus levels of flail.

So say it with me now... IS IT MAY YET?! HOW ABOUT NOW!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer.

Not only that, but also...

Vine snippet of X-Men: Days of Future Past over which there has already been wank *facepalm

If you were to ask me which one I'm more excited about... it would have to be the mutants BUT the Captain is giving them a good run for their money.

All together now... IS IT SPRING YET?! HOW ABOUT NOW?!

So - yes, the state of the Fannish [livejournal.com profile] becky_monster

Doctor Who and I are having a trial separation. The last block of episodes were just 'meh' to me. The Neil Gaiman episode was good but... the spark has gone. And as for Matt Smith leaving the show? That was the sign that I'm not in love with Who the way I once was. I don't do well with regenerations - the media speculation is enough to make any sane person run for the hills - and then there is the whole wrench of saying goodbye to one favourite and getting used to the new one.

That and I'll freely admit that I never have gotten over Nine and that was EIGHT BLOODY YEARS AGO!

*cough*

I'll watch the Christmas episode and will likely cry because despite the last season, I've loved Eleven but Twelve has to be something pretty flipping special to invoke the fannishness of before.

* * *

X-Men Movieverse - am taking a mental health break from this fandom(s) for the time being. As much as have I loved writing in these universe(s) - I think I (or rather, my muse) need more time to recharge our proverbial batteries before undertaking anything else in this universe. Given that The Wolverine opens ten days... who knows. Not to mention that I am following Bryan Singer on twitter, who has a rather wonderful habit of posting behind the scenes pics from X-Men: Days of Future Past out, which makes me incredibly gleeful at the best of times; so that is bringing me hope... and now I can 'hear' Sir Ian McKellen reciting one of the speeches from the first film in my head... help

That's not to say that I'm not writing - I am... or at least I'm trying to! I wish I could say more but... allow me to show rather than tell, deal?

* * *

So, that's me - in all my weirdness - how about you guys?

And if any of yous are on twitter - I'm becky_monster there too - please feel free to follow (but please yell so I can follow back!)

So - yes, still here, just not posting as much as I used to - who is? but wanted to share this with y'all. Especially the USians...

Oblivion (2013) came out in the UK weekend just gone. I had read all manner of reviews beforehand, some hated it, others thought it was good and so on. Folks whose opinions run closest to mine thought it was excellent... which was heartening.

Especially as they were right! The movie is directed and written by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and yes, it shares the gorgeous aesthetics of that film. Truly, your eyeballs are going to love this! And your ears too - the soundtrack by M83 is a thing of beauty.

There has been a lot of talk in the reviews as to the film using ideas that have appeared in other Sci-Fi films. I won't go into details but if you've made up your mind to go see - try not to read the reviews lest the surprises are spoiled for you. The thing is, even the films that Oblivion has riffed on, have taken ideas from others - there are no new ideas in SF. Just recycled ones either done badly or well.

With Oblivion, I thought they were done well - and for the 2nd time this year, I want to see a new release again at the cinema. (The first one was the wonderful Trance). Which from me is high praise indeed. That and I think I may either ask for or proffer this as a fandom for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year.

Did I mention it passes (in my understanding anyhow) the Bechdel Test - more than once?!

Yes, it's that good. So, go, see, on the best screen possible!

In other news, reading the following today made me incredibly *happy* Now Filming: 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', directed by Bryan Singer and 'Jupiter Ascending' directed by the Wachowskis

So, that's me - how are you guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (general_f_censorship)
This week has been a 'good things, bad things' week.

The bad was *bad* - I screwed up at work in a very unprofessional way. I'm in the process of apologising and keeping everything crossed That Will Be That. We'll have to see, I sure as heck hope so.

The good was very good - Tuesday was my birthday, thanks to everyone who wished me well! Spent it in London doing All The Things! Specifically, had my hair cut shorter than before (and that was short) saw Oz the Great and Powerful which was... worth the money I spent on a ticket - it passed Bechdel, which is saying a bit and it was very pretty to look at. Sometimes, I am very easy to please;)

I also saw the James MacAvoy production of MacBeth - which was excellent. Which means I've now seen both of the Professor Xaviers' play this role (Sir Patrick Stewart performed the role in '07) - and I've seen both of the Magnetos expose themselves in the name of Art too... but that's a tale for another day

Ahem!

MacAvoy was chillingly superb as the Scottish king in a very futuristic, dystopian setting of the play. There was one scene that will stay with me for a *very* long time, I won't spoil it - even though, you know the play is nearly 400 years old! but needless to say, if MacAvoy does cold hearted b*stard very, very well.

It's not a spoiler to say that he (and the rest of the cast) all spoke with Scottish accents, which worked remarkably well and does make me wonder if anyone else has done this before... The stage was tiny - it could fit into my work office (which isn't huge - there are seven desks in it and I don't have to shout to be heard across it either, just talk normal) with enough space left for the server room (at work - not in the production).

If you are in the area of London and can finangle a ticket - not many, I know, but hey! - I would recommend it, heartily before it finishes at the end of April.

So, that's me - how are you guys?

So, I have decided to take the plunge and do the XMFC Bingo this year. Have never done a bingo card - so first time and all that. This is the card:

AU: rom com anal sex time travel (to the future) role reversal pining
jealousy AU: ballet/dancers backstory (Riptide) Charles/Wesley Angel and Raven
Erik's massive cock AU: noir wildcard crossdressing backstory (Angel)
Erik and/or Mystique bonds with old Hellfire Club members AU: spies/secret agents AU: Victorian Darwin back from the dead(!) BAMF!Darwin
McKellen!Erik/Stewart!Charles/Fassbender!Erik/McAvoy!Charles AU: genosha AU: frat boys bearstd>
AU: prostitution

There is plenty for me to work with here - I don't know if I would be able to do *all* of them but I should be able to pull a bingo or two out of this...

Any tips from more practiced hands at this sort of thing?!

Continuing with the yearly repost of everything I wrote for the seasonal fic exchanges. This time, it's the stories I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. For the first time, I not only wrote my assignment (which I'll post in the next day or two) but not one, but TWO treats. Which still surprises even me. Both can be considered as being 'crack', which might actually explain a thing or two;)

Title - Baby Please Come Home

Fandom(s) - Arthur Christmas (2011) and X-Men Movieverse (2000-)

'Baby, Please Come Home' can also be read at AO3

On Christmas Eve, during his first year as Santa, Arthur finds out that he’s not the only one who can make people happy at Christmas. )

So, the thing I thought I was 'supposed' to be doing (that is posting my [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang fic) yesterday? *Should* be happening on 1st February instead. Which is a good thing as I've just gone and added another 1,100 words to it.

Oops.

So, yeah - I now have to throw myself at the mercy of my beta reader to read through it before bolting it onto the other 36,000 odd words. Again, no typos - the story is really *that* long!

* * *

In happier news - as I am sure *everyone* knows right now: Doctor Who returns on Easter Saturday/30th March.

Which is right and good because just like Christmas brings a new episode - Easter brings the new series. Now, the next question is, will there be a mass gathering of fans to watch the new episode in London this year?!

* * *

I really will get around to posting about the films I'm looking forward to this year, at some point. When I do - chances are, this one will be on the list - Teaser Poster for Trance, the new film by Danny Boyle and it's due out at the end of March too!
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_xmfc_slash_ready)
And so, in the grand tradition of posting wot I have written for various seasonal exchanges and the like - may I present one of the stories that I wrote as the part of the maHOOOSIVE 30,000 odd words I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo in 2012.

Title: Aquila
A Gift For: treasuredleisure as part of the [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant exchange
Characters/Pairings: Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, Raven, Hank, Moira and others
Rating: R
Length: 6,700+ words
Summary: - Charles Xavier is a genetics lecturer and telepath at an American University. Unbeknownst to Charles, there is a bright shining light in his class that he meets at a bar one night. That light is Erik Lehnsherr, mutant and one of Charles' students; something that Charles doesn't find out about until after a night of the best sex he's ever had.

But that's not the reason why he's moping in a bar in Cambridge... or is it?

Author note - heartfelt gratitude to afrocurl for beta duties (and sarky comments that made me laugh out loud and grammar wrangling and kink hitting and-) Without her, this story would be less than it is. Also, thanks to the [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo challenge for getting me to *write*!.

And, yes, the bar does exist.

This story can also be read over at Archive of Our Own

Regardless of having earned his degrees at Oxford, Charles always had a soft spot for the city of Cambridge. )
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_x-men_charles&erik)
So - picture the scene...

Our brave heroine, who is writing like it's going out of fashion to make her words for [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo for the day. It also helps that these words will get her to the 'good bits' of her [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story. Denouments and all that jazz...

She goes to her friends page to find the relevant entry and sees the following...

Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart to star in X-Men: Days of Future Past alongside Michael Fassbender and James MacAvoy.

Our heroine's first thought? 'Naaaaahhhh,' then upon reading Bryan Singer's confirmatory tweets - ZOMGSQUEEEEEEEEEEE! FLAIL!

So yeah - there went me getting anymore writing done this evening! I have committed 493 words so far, which is a good number but I really wanted more but... this! be still my fangirl glee!

I was looking forward to this movie - although I've never read the original comics, when Matthew Vaughn left, I was nervous, perfectly understandable as we could have ended up with another Brett Ratner (pitoo!) but then Bryan Singer stepped in and I was much pleased. And no this.... eeeeee! Although - I will give £5 to Stonewall if Sir Ian makes a reference to this movie in interviews because you know he will, although I can vouch that he's done something similar in the name of Art too and daymn Mystique is one lucky lady. So's her brother.

So... Is It Summer 2014 yet?! How About Now?!
beckymonster: Becky icon (ncis_YES!)
Sounding off...

[livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo - pledge: 100 words a day. Written: 2801 words. Yes, I know that's practically my entire word count for the month in one day. I'm surprised too! But it does mean that my [livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant story (or at least the first draft of it!) has been completed!

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant - 6,274 words for the 1st draft in the bag. One day I'll get back to the habit of brevity in my writing. Today is *not* that day.

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - ahahaha... next silly question?! No, really! Still zero words but re-aquaintance with the canon is in my future.

[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang - 27327 words and counting. As for the rest of it? Let's discuss something else. It's my own damn fault, mind. One day I will learn *not* to write about the women that canon sweeps under the carpet; today is not that day.

I think I have about another two - three *big* scenes to write and then the epilogue. Getting the first draft in before the end of the month is still achievable. After all, stranger sh*t has happend!

* * *

So that's me. How are you guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_dalek_fanfic)
[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang - rough draft is IN. It now stands at over 27,000 words. I have a final finish date that due to circs (remind me to update about 'Mick') is a bit earlier than others but... hey! I can and WILL make it!

*

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant - I'm going to bash out the first draft of this, this week. I have a sneaky suspicion that my giftee has re-written their 'Dear Secret Mutant' letter. Not that I mind but I had a 'good' ending planned using the details from the letter I first read.

Oh well - I have a title, I have an idea, I have analogies... I need to get on with it!

*

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - I've downloaded (LEGALLY!) canon to rewatch. Does that count? Also, I think I have an idea and a title. These are important! Now I just have to write the bugger!

*

So, that's me - how are you guys?
beckymonster: Becky icon (movies_xmfc_team)
[livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo - 401 words. Wanted more but it's Monday,

* * *

To be filed under 'I'll Believe It When I See It!'

Matthew Vaughn is RUMOURED to be in talks to direct Star Wars: Episode VII

I didn't talk much about Vaughn leaving XMFC - because I was praying to the Goddess of Geeks that we'd get someone 'good' to take his place. I still have the horrors over X-Men: The Last Stand - six years on, it *still* sucks like a Dyson!
Someone must have heard as Bryan Singer stepped up to the plate - someone who's work I like a hell of a lot (And if he can pull Sir Ian's 'Magneto' suit out of storage and get it tailored to fit Fassbender - all the better but that's just me). So coloured me a happy monster. Also with the other knight talking about returning... could be good!

Again, it's all rumours, lies and conjecture - but if he goes from Mutants to that Galaxy, Far, Far away... best of luck to him. He has the chops, can handle the FX and big casts but the pressure?

Hmmmm....
beckymonster: Becky icon (DW_dalek_fanfic)
[livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo pledge: 100 words. Written: 815 words. My [livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang story won't write itself, y'know!

Talking of which - it is possibly the 'longest' story I've ever written as of today. Nearly 20,500 words written. Obviously, I'll call it when I finally post it but there is still a ways to go.

* * *

Some of you may be wondering what that great disturbance in the Force is.... The [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignments went out and... although I was *not* expecting to be matched on the fandom I have been... I think I'll be able to do it justice. Although I reserve the right to flail like no one's business between now and hand in.

IF YOU, OH WONDERFUL YULEGOAT ARE READING THIS my letter is here and remember, whatever you write, I am bound to love it, so long as you've enjoyed creating it. Remember - optional details are optional!

[livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo pledge - 100 words.

Written - 819 words. Alas, I can't carry them over for the 'lean' days ;)

* * *

So, sounding off:

[livejournal.com profile] xmenbigbang - 19593 words so far. 'First draft' due on 12th - should make that with room to spare, just glad it doesn't have to be *finished*

[livejournal.com profile] secret_mutant - 0 words. I have my prompts, still trying to figure out which one to write. It doesn't help that there are two I could do....

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide - sign ups are closed. Just waiting for my assignment and second guessing what it could be in the meantime. I won't get it right, but hey! it's fun to try;)

Dear Awesome Person

Hello!

How are you? I hope this letter finds you well. Can I just start off by saying that you are an awesome person with impeccable taste? You're writing me an X-Men First Class story, therefore *awesome*!

Just before we get to the nitty-gritty, just be aware that whatever you write, so long as you've enjoyed it's crafting, I am bound to enjoy it too. So, no pressure on you;)

I'll talk you through my likes and dislikes before getting into the prompts themselves. If this seems kinda familiar... I copied and pastaed stuff from my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide letter. Even so, the sentiments are still the same.

The 'Yes Please!' list includes - Plot, character-led stories, friendships, alternative realities where one thing changes, hugs/cuddling, women characters being awesome and competent, teams equaling families, happy(ish) endings, conversations/banter, films, kisses, laughter, humour, science, teamwork, adventures, slice of life, dancing, joy, life...

Fandom Specific - I love the (what I refer to as) The Silver Knights as much as the Celtic Hotties versions of Charles And Erik, so if you're hearing Sir Patrick and Sir Ian - go right on ahead. I love and adore Raven, so if she turns up to snark and generally hang out, I'll be very happy. If you want an OT3 with the three of them, I'd be overjoyed. Also, found families, mutant rights/politics, Alt Universes...

And did I mention that I'm very much a denialist about the Beach Divorce? As in It Did Not Happen (or at least it might have been a separation?) If that goes against your beliefs, writer, then I don't mind them being separated, so long as there is a chance of reconciliation? As I said - fluffy monster is fluffy.

If you want to go down the sexyteims route - sensuality is key as is emotional engagement and consent among adults too. My strongest leaning is towards m/m, quite happy with het but I'm afraid that f/f does nothing for me. Be far happier with female friendships, if that's okay with you.

The 'No Thank You' list - Character death*, kink, humiliation, partner betrayal, character bashing (especially women characters) porn minus plot, dark themes. Yes, I am a fluff monster of epic proportions - plays havoc with the upholstery.

*Shaw is fine - everybody else isn't!

And Now A Quick Word From Our Sponsors Re Ratings - If you, awesome writer, can’t ‘do’ romance (het, slash or poly as the prompt suggests - or not) I would lovelovelove (more than cake!) Gen fic.

Okay - onto the prompts:

1) - Date Night At The Movies - what can I say? I'm a movie buff - go period specific ('Dr No' - aka the first Bond film came out in April '63 in the US, for one) or more up to date if you're skewing older. What do they go see? What does everyone else think? Is it a date or just two friends going to see a film and hang out?

2) - On the World Bromance Tour (aka the recruiting trip) Charles (by complete accident) telepathically 'hears' Erik call out his name while he's masturbating in the shower. What does Charles do?
This idea intrigues the hell out of me, unfortunately, I can't write porn to save my *life*. Charles seems to be very much intent on keeping his promise to stay out of Erik's head, but what about the things he can't 'help' but hear. Is he shocked? pleased? burdened with angst? tries to ignore it? How does Erik react?

3) - Bond! AU. Either Charles or Erik as 007 and the other as their kickass accomplice. Fill the other characters in as needed but world saving shenanigans please!
- Hi! I'm Beckymonster and I'm a Bond nerd. My Bond geekiness is on the upswing at the moment what with the release of Skyfall which is freakin' awesome! If you haven't seen it, do. Highly recommended. If you want to make either Charles or Erik into Q, then I will love that a hell of a lot. He's a character I've always loved and the new version is just a delight.

4) - Dancing - This is the Gen prompt (if it wasn't completely obvious) and all I can say is if you choose this - go nuts. I love ballet, modern dance, Strictly Come Dancing (in the UK) jumping around to a song on the radio - you name it, I love it. Who does, who doesn't and to what music.

So - I hope that's given you *something* to work with! If not, talk to the mod about getting (anonymously!) in contact to ask for further intel. More than happy to oblige!

Written for the [livejournal.com profile] xmenreversebang event

Original and very inspirational art by [livejournal.com profile] maichan
X-Men Verse: Mainly movieverses with a dollop of comics!verse, Alternative Universe
Characters/Pairings:Charles/Erik with background Raven/Magda, Magda, Kurt, Wanda and Pietro - or Erik's 'dead' wife, Nightcrawler and the Maximoff twins - did I mention the AU bit?
Rating: PG
Word Count: 7114
Warnings: AU, fluff

Story Notes: For those of you keeping track at home - Professor X will be played by Sir Patrick Stewart in this story, Erik 'Magneto' Lehnsherr will be played by Sir Ian McKellen. With Raven played by Rebecca Romji and Kurt played by Alan Cumming. Also - any references to The Avengers, refers to the cinematic version, although for the sake of confusion, like in the comic books, the twins are part of that august band.

As neither the twins or Magda have movieverse counterparts (yet!) - please feel free to cast whom you will. I did have Luke Evans in mind as Pietro and Eva Green as Wanda. As for Magda - I'm leaning towards Dame Helen Mirren.

: First off, my heartfelt thanks and gratitude must go to the amazing [livejournal.com profile] maichan who has been utterly awesome from start to finish. When I first saw her art, it was the one I wanted to work with above all others. Even when I was struck down by a terrible bout of writer's block - I still kept that image on my desktop to push me forward. She's been an excellent collaborator, happy to read my scribbles and give feedback. It's been a pleasure to work with her and I hope I've done her beautiful art justice. Please, please, take time out to leave feedback on her work, she deserves the praise.

I'd also like to express my grateful thanks to the mods of [livejournal.com profile] xmenreversebang for mounting and running such a fun and enjoyable show. I'd also like to express my undying gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] afrocurl for beta duties above and beyond, I'm pathetically grateful!
