Oscars aftermath
Overall, I don't think I missed that much by having to bail out early. Don't get me wrong. I love the whole shebang - it's my version of 'Superbowl' or the FA Cup (big UK football event) but I fear that I would have ended up yelling some rather unsavoury comments at the tv. Which when you consider that this would have been 4am in the morning... so not a good idea!
First up - Gavin Hood was Colonel Vaselov. Many thanks to Stargate Solutions (link left;))for pointing that out. I don't know why I thought that it was Hathor's First Prime either - it was late at night!
He can now add the Oscar to a whole slew of other nominations he's won. Such as the Audience award at Edinburgh, where it beat out 'Serentiy'. As in the Joss Whedon flick. No, I don't know how that one happened either. I intend to see the film and make my own mind up;)
As Jon Stewart pointed out "For those of you keeping score at home. Martin Scorsese: zero Oscars, Three 6 Mafia: one." I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that there is something criminally wrong with that state of affairs!
The others fell into place as expected. Hoffman for 'Capote' (I'll go see that at the weekend), Witherspoon for 'Walk the Line' (didn't think much of that but she's an excellent actress). Ang Lee now has an Oscar - yay! Now all they need to do is award Serena McKellen and Scorsese and I'll be a happier Monster.
Best Picture - Crash. What The Frak?!
Yes, I know that the Academy like to spread the love and all, (after two for two for the last two years - it was due for a split between director/film) but this is frelling awful.
I fear that the the cowboys of Brokeback made the Academy 'uneasy' in the same way that hobbits and Wizards made them uneasy back in '01 when Fellowship was nominated. A Beautiful Mind won - how many top film polls has that won?
They had a chance to be political and they chickened out. Fantasy eventually had it's day two years later with Return of the King. I wonder how long it will take for a film featuring a homosexual relationship will take the big prize home.
Even so, I'll be there, next year. Though this time, I'm writing the blog in word first and cutting and pasting. Not to mention staying up all night. Secret of my success... don't go into work the next day!;)
