DAY EIGHTEEN - WHATEVER TICKLES YOUR FANCY
A Doctor Who themed pubcrawl around London
Starting at Bunker on Old Brewer's Yard/Sheldon Street. Location for 'Web of Fear'
After this pub - to Great Queen Street (The War Machines) to The Freemasons Arms, Long Acre/Covent Garden
Next one on the list is in Covent Garden (Invasion of the Dinosaurs) The Nags Head, Covent Garden (handy for the Royal Opera House, for the more culturally minded...)
The next pub isn't a location per se. Thus can be dropped from the itinerary if needed. The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn, where on the penultimate Saturday of the month, you'll find a gathering of the nicest, geekiest Whovians I've ever had the pleasure of meeting;)
Back to Covent Garden (see note about dropping this one, as it means doublebacking onto oneself!), across the Strand (watch out for the traffic and inflatable Daleks!) and make your way to John Adam Street (which stood in for Downing Street in Aliens of London) next pub - The Princess of Wales
Then onto to Trafalgar Square - famous London landmark seen in hundreds of films and in Rose, Christmas Invasion and a slew of other DW stories. Next pub (which is right next to a bank - hey! a useful tip!) is Halfway II Heaven. Of note - slashers won't get funny looks if they talk about their pairings here. Which is a very roundabout way of saying it's a gay bar.
Whitehall next - seat of government and backdrop to Web of Fear, Rose and a whole slew of others onto The Old Shades. Don't be surprised if any Pratchett fans in your party cackle madly at the name...
Keep wandering down Whitehall, past the Guards, past the *real* Downing Street (you'll have to have good eyesight as a) you're on the wrong side of the road and b) it's down a cul-de-sac) to The Red Lion, Parliament Street I recommend the outside seating if it's a nice day. Downing Street being the backdrop of the first Nu Skool Who two-parter Aliens of London and World War Three. Any farting aliens you may meet are your own concern!
Okay, around the corner onto Parliament Square (as seen in Genesis of the Daleks, Rose, Web of Fear, the Slitheen two parter etc. Those of you from 'out of town' (be it London, the UK or Earth) may wish to take a moment to take in the sights of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Those of you who are local may also want to still have a look. Impressive aren't they?
Right - next bar. St Stephen's Tavern, Bridge St. If nothing else - stop here for food. The cheesy chips are *awesome*!
Now - this is where my memory gets a little fuzzy. My guide says that the Marquis of Granby is the next pub. You go past Westminster Abbey to get to this. From what I remember a) it was closed and b) I swear we walked past a couple of shooting locations for Torchwood: Children of Earth (the scene where Ianto phones his sister - there). So - you takes your choices.
What I can tell you is that you go down Millbank, past (deep breath) Thames House (setting for a goodly part of Torchwood: Children of Earth), past those huge iron doors that you see slam shut in Torchwood: CoE Day 4 towards the last pub on the itinerary.
Again, from personal experience? If you *know* that there are Torchwood fans in your party who get rather emotional at the mention of CoE (and that day!) FOR THE LOVE OF RASSILON, DISTRACT THEM! Um, yes, can you say *flashbacks* at the sight of those damn doors!
Onto our last pub of the crawl. If you've made it this far, congratulations!. You'll be staggering along Millbank, past the Tate Britian (look! more culture!) towards Millbank tower (Terror of the Zygons, the Invasion) in the direction of The Morpeth Arms, Pimlico.
Of note, if you walk (or stagger, depends on how sober you are) up Vauxhall Bridge Road (away from the Bridge, this is important!) you'll end up at Victoria Station. Which connects you to just about anywhere and everywhere, within reason!
