Before I begin - a note to self... leaving t'internet to itself for three days isn't a good idea. Two words - 'Skip 300'.
So - yes, as mentioned previously, those lovely lovely people at the BFI managed to arrange a (public) preview of the first episode of the new series of Torchwood.
And yes, while I *still* have issues about CoE, that was two years ago and I have managed (mostly!) to make peace with them and move on.I also have a bridge to sell you, if you're interested.
So - with that caveat out of the way - what did I think? Given that the BFI stressed (quite considerably!) that they were happy for people to blog about what they saw, they stressed that if anyone spoils (to the extent that was kicked up over the season opener which wasn't a BFI showing) then no more lovely previews.
Which would be a very bad thing as I do enjoy them a hell of a lot because - cinematic experience, excellent conversation with like-minded, intelligent fanpersons (the usual suspects,
torn_eledhwen,
vayshti and drinks! What more can a monster ask for? Apart from having to rush off for another screening thanks to the Tube Strikes *shakes tiny fist of rage at RMT*
So with that in mind - even though I am going to do my damndest NOT to spoil *anything* - it's cut teim!
Den of Geek - Spoiler Free Review (positive)
I'm putting the Den of Geek review there as a)I agree with it and b) it's going to be a bit more coherent than me;) Which is not hard even at the best of times!
On the whole - this is *good* telly. If the rest of the series is as good as (or better than) this then it will be worth the time watching (and practicing spoiler dodging!). It hits the ground running and covers ground in a way that intrigues those who haven't the first clue, those who enjoyed CoE but are not *fans* (I'm thinking people like the Mummy Monster, the Daddy Monster and SU#4 who all sat and watched CoE with me) and fans as well. This is never an easy task but this achieves it well.
The above is a long-winded way of saying 'Don't expect Captain Jack to turn up in the first scene!'. In fact, SPOILER! SPOILER! I don't think he turns up until nearly half way through /SPOILER! /SPOILER!
It's also obvious that money has been spent on this - the helicopter shots of Wales will make the Welsh Tourist Office very happy indeed. It also shows in the sheer 'busyiness' (if that's the right word) of the sets. Lots of people and lots of fx as well.
One thing I will point out is that this series revels in the fact that it will go out post-watershed. It deals with very adult issues - mainly ethical (although the series teaser did hint at a scene that is going to be 'difficult' watch in front of the 'rents) at first but boy oh boy the Daily Mail are going to *hate* this!;)
Also - a warning to those of you who are a bit squeamish - you may need someone to watch and report back for you. I'm reasonably okay but one scene had me hiding behind my hands, peeking out through my fingers. You'll know it when you see it, listen out for a S1 & S2 shout out as a warning.
I noted at the start that this is 'good telly'. I didn't say whether it was good Torchwood - mainly because I don't know. Baggage aside, this has the potential to be an excellent drama (which is always a good thing) - it looks like it has the potenial to make people think and discuss the issues raised (and there will be a few).
Torchwood was Captain Jack, in Wales, looking after his people and saving the world, while looking gorgeous and flirting up a storm/shagging the tea boy. We all know what happened there, don't we?
And yet... I'm willing to give it a try. Yes, I see the new characters as red shirts but that's my emotional reaction. The intellectual reaction is that I'm intrigued and want to see more.
Right now - the head is winning over the heart. When the BBC *finally* state when it will be shown, I'll be watching... and I recommend others to as well.
If you want more details and are happy to be 'spoiled' for detail - PM me with what you want to know and what level of detail you want. If I can remember, I'll try to oblige.
