I've been a writing machine over the weekend (approx 2230 words in two days!) so I am taking a break and catching up on my movie prattle.
If nothing else - it gives me a chance to figure out where in the name of Christopher Nolan I am going, with the story I am writing, next. I am hoping that I might have this sussed before my
yuletide assignment lands in my life.
If nothing else - I'm going to need time to re-watch the canon for whatever I am assigned. Time for panicking goes without saying!

So - onwards!
Caveat Emptor - As ever, these are my thoughts (shallow, strange and downright perverse as they are) so please feel free to disagree or point and laugh as you will;)
Girl With A Pearl Earring
I watched this, orginally, in 2003 at the London Film Festival. Thought it was a beautiful film, gave serious consideration to turning gay for Scarlett Johnannson and almost understood about Colin Firth.
The guy playing Peiter reminded me of an ex-boyfriend and thus I totally blanked on him....
All well and good - only to realise, quite recently, that Pieter was played by Cillian Murphy! Arguably* one of the hottest men on the planet. So yes, two years before my 'official' introduction via Mr Nolan and a certain bat - I watched and did not pay any mind. *facepalm* In my defence? That was a really 'orrible wig!
So - I made up for it this time;) Still a great film - the music is *beautiful* - definite sense of... 'sensuality' in this film - as much about what you don't see as what you do. If you've never seen this and you like art - I'd recommend it as a Sunday afternoon watch.
Monsters
I've spoken at length about this wonderful movie already - but it bears repeating.
GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE! IT IS AWESOME
RED
I thoroughly enjoyed this film - yes, it had flaws (not enough Dame Helen Mirren for a start!) but it had a certain charm. Dame Helen Mirren being a complete and total badass being one of them. As well as Karl Urban being hot and grumpy was also worth a watch. Ditto Brian Cox (need I point out which one?) - his 'relationship' with another character in the film was lovely. If it hadn't been for the fact that I'd already chosen my fandoms for
yuletide I might have thrown this one in too - perhaps next year (when the DVD is out?)
One to watch if you like bloody good actors giving masterclasses on how to be awesome and big explosions.
Let Me In
Yes, I have seen Let The Right One In/Låt den rätte komma in and think it's the better of the two.
Which is not to say that Let Me In is a bad film. It's not. It's a very good remake of the swedish original, it's just that it... doesn't have the 'subtlety' of the original.
The two leads in this version are excellent - it's just that the makers 'forgot' that one of the beauties of the original was that you didn't 'see' that much. Which for me is great because I do *not* do gore at the best of times and given the nature of the film, this is a good thing.
Because at the end of the day - it's not a horror film - it's a film about two alienated kids who find each other and form a friendship that saves them both.
I'd recommend it for anyone who has a 'horror' of subtitled filmsheathens!. Everyone else - watch the original. You'll be glad you did.
The Last Samurai
Remember how I said that Cillian Murphy is one of the hottest men on the planet? Well, I'd add Ken Watanabe to that list too.
If you've never seen him in anything but either Batman Begins or Inception for the love of cinema - watch this film!
I watched this when it first came out at the cinema - I remember clearly that this was Tom Cruise's 'Oscar' movie... only for Ken Watanabe to walk off with said film, firmly tucked under his arm!
That's not to say that Cruise is not good in this film - he is. Exceptionally good, it's just that... Ken Watanabe's Katsumoto is just astonishing. As far as I know, it was Watanabe's first 'western' film and boy oh boy does he make an impact! The man is just *gorgeous*
I dare *anyone* to take their eyes away from him when he's on screen (so much so that I utterly blanked on Hiroyuki Sadana - who would go onto be in Danny Boyle's Sunshine).
The rest of the film is just as much a feast for the eyes - the scenery (hallo thar New Zealand!) - the Oscar nominated costumes - by the same woman who clothed all of Middle Earth (and won the Oscar for that too, in the same year!;))
And it has ninjas too. What more can you ask for?
So yes, well worth a watch on DVD, if you haven't already. If you have - worth a re-watch!
*How to confuse a
becky_monster in one move - ask her to pick between Mr Watanabe, Mr Murphy and Tom Hardy! It Cannot Be Done!
