That was... gorgeous. Not to mention heartbreaking too.
I've never really been a fan of Van Gogh's work - but now? I'm going to be taking a second look. The scene where Eleven, Amy (and the audience) get to see how Vincent 'sees' the night sky is possibly one of the most beautiful scenes that I've seen in Who this year. Excellent use of fx in this episode.
What else is good? The monster being invisible. Great way of cutting down on the fx budgie and making the best use of the actors. That and when it is 'seen' it's more effective.
Tony Curran as Vincent was just wonderful - he conveyed Van Gogh's condition so well. Am I the only one who thinks that Van Gogh possibly thought that the Doctor and Amy were part of his 'illness' but the very final scene makes me think no.
Usually I can take or leave Richard Curtis' work - his films especially (this might have more to do with the fact that Hugh Grant puts my teeth on edge!) but this could be his best work.
Unpopular Fannish Opinion Ahoy!
I found this episode to be more emotionally engaging than 'The Hungry Earth/In Cold Blood' were. This could be because I am a very bad monster. Or because I didn't let myself get emotionally involved because the last time I got emotionally involved with a Chibnall script was Torchwood's 'Exit Wounds' and I still can't watch that episode.
So - takes your pick!
