Stranger things have happened at sea...

Okay, this is more for me to be able to point and laugh/screech 'I SO TOTALLY ROOL' next year... even so...
Best Picture shortlist extended to ten for 2009 ceremony
Leaving aside any 'quality' issues (Crash was a better film than Brokeback Mountain? And how many moons revolve around your planet?) I think this could be an utterly *awesome* move.
Okay - it's really a year late (Dark Knight was a worthy film but Wall*e - utterly robbed!) but I suppose there is a case for 'better late than never'.
Not to mention - it *might* actually get more (gosh, shock horror) *popular* films nominated for the big prize. They won't win (Star Wars was nominated in '77 but obviously never won) but at least they get the kudos and AMPAS (aka 'The Academy') get the tv ratings they crave. Ratings always spike when there is a 'popular' film nominated - e.g. Return of the King.
So - my 'suggestions' are as follows...
Up - Pixar - need I say any more? That and it's an utterly magnificent film.that I want to see again NOW
Avatar - Yes, it's James Cameron, but only if the story is as awesome as the visuals are supposed to be. Can't you tell that I'm not convinced by the hype yet?
And the real dark horse... Star Trek. You think I'm kiddin? It's been a critical and commercial success...
As I said earlier - putting this up so I can point and laugh hysterically and how far out I was... or gloat at how right I was. I may add to it in time.
Time will tell.
Not to mention... I promise to talk about something *other* than movies soon!
